Pepe emoticons are gone for good, your thoughts?
For those of you who missed it, the creator of Pepe filed a copyright claim and Steam removed all the Pepe emoticons from Steam. Well, sorta. Anyone who owns one just gets a blank space when they use it.

What do you all think about it?

Personally, I find it hilarious that they're gone.

Doesn't really matter to me. That creator of Pepe really took his time to find that emote though, you could imagine how angry he was when he told his lawyers to write up a cease and desist to Valve. Hahaha

Maximum level pettiness from this guy, he's filing takedowns for anyone using the meme because he wants to "make the meme great again" and likely start selling his own merch based off of it.

No, actually he's filing takedowns against people using it for commercial profit (which is the case on Steam) and also people using it to push racism and hate. Or do you think that trying to protect your own copyrighted works from unlicensed use, theft and misuse is "maximum level pettiness?"

Taking it down when used comercially is perfectly fine. It's him picking and choosing who can use it non comercially that's petty. Either everybody should be able to use it, or nobody should. It's petty to stop one group from using it just because you disagree with them, but it's a-okay when it's not the "nazis" doing it.

Honestly, I don't even think the guy is protecting his brand, he's a nobody web comic creator that almost nobody knew about prior to this, and very few do after this. He wants a spotlight, nothing more.

Well said, my good sir.

I can see and understand what you mean and all. But at the end you lost me a little bit. If someone created something that is popular odds are people want to be known for it.

Unless it was something bad.

It's perfectly fair to want to be known for something you created, it's how he did it that's the problem. He could have easily capitalized on it, shut down any commercial use of the character and started doing it personally instead. He'd turn a profit and likely even get his name out there a bit. Instead, he responded like a child that doesn't wish to share his toy, and because of that he'll just fade into obscurity again once his tantrum ends.
I just didn't find it funny. That was my beef with it

If you created something then you probably wouldn't want it to be used as a nazi/white supremacist/kkk symbol, unless you support nazis and stuff like that.

It actually sounds like you resent him for protecting his own copyrighted works, as if its a personal slight somehow. Screw nazis and angsty little trolls and manchildren who don't get enough attention from mommy so they have to be dbags on the internet. If doing what he's doing puts them out then great.

He's entirely within his rights to protect his copyright from misuse and abuse.

As far as Steam, the games that these emoticons came from were complete garbage that was copy & pasted from the unity asset store with zero effort that were made only to exploit Steam by making money off of trading cards and memey emoticons. Without the emoticons, they've got jack s*** now.

It's funny that you're more outraged about some stupid emoticon than you are with people flooding Steam with worthless trash games made solely to exploit the Steam Market.
Don't care, doesn't affect me. Unfortunate for those who spent 13$ however.

I wouldn't really care. Personally, if someone enjoys something I made, I wouldn't care who they are. If a Nazi uses something I made, I'm not a Nazi by proxy.

I don't resent him, I just don't like him. He's throwing a tantrum over petty memes, key word, memes. The guy is a child throwing a fit. If anyone here is showing clear resentment, you are.
You continue to speak as if "Nazis and angsty little trolls and manchildren who don't get enough attention from mommy" are the only people that used it.

It being within his right doesn't mean I have to agree with him on how he does things, nor does it make it less petty. People were using his property for a while before he spoke out, why didn't he care then? It isn't about protecting his copyright.

I strongly dislike games made to exploit Steam in any form, and if they take a hit, good, but that isn't what we were talking about.

Indeed it's not. It's about seeing his creation abused to promote views he doesn't agree with. It's within his power to shut some of it down, so he does.

You clearly never created something you're proud of, because the you'd know the feeling of protectiveness it engenders.
Quite a lot of butthurt over a stupid meme ...lol.

Mourning a meme with a meme. That's quite fitting.
F**k Matt Furie! :shelterfrog:
It's Matt's intellectual property, being used commercially without his permission, so I support his decision.
