what do you think of games with perma-death?
I believe that the devs who put perma-death in their games, want us to learn from our mistakes, and if we make a mistake, this is the penalty" start all over again, no respawn". But its okay for me, I find some games with perma-death fun.

good until i get 7 hours into the game and die-
Depends on the scenario. Quite a number of roguelikes and roguelites practically live and die by it, perhaps with some inherent progression added into the mix.

As for full-length games with optional permadeath difficulties, I'm not a fan of it. Lots of risk for very little return aside from a fleeting achievement.
After the first couple of characters, perma-death is how I roll. You tend to play differently when your next mistake could be your last.
I'm down with it. All you weaklings can play scrub-core.
I think that death is a very immersion breaking event in games so in the most immersive ones I play like that to make it more enjoyable... for example I stop the game if I die instead of respawning even if I have to restart an entire stage instead of doing again only the last stage of it, or I can even use cheats to avoid death if it makes the experience more immersive and enjoyable.
So for me perma death should be about immersion. In a game easy enough (a game that is focused in being immersive) it can be a good way to make the player more invested in the game and be more careful about what he does. I could like that. But if Perma death is used only for challenge purpose I'm not a fan of challenges and I don't appreciate that, it would be just annoying.
See, this is why you make a separate save file of your Don't Starve data on your desktop every time you start it up. Make sure you take breaks and replace the file on your desktop every so often. You can do the same thing with Minecraft too. Or just turn keep inventory on.

Do you want to lose your stack of diamonds in the Nether again?

Depends on the genre.

Permadeath is pretty much made for roguelikes/lites, but I sure as hell am not going to put 20 hours into a long campaign, die, and then have to restart the game.
Enter the gungeon does a fine job with it
The longer and more unfair the game, the less fun and the more sadistic it is.

Hardcore minecraft, thats fine. Hardcore terraria, thats not. Like in the past hardcore terraria was fine but now with expert mode, bloodmoon/frostmoon/alien invasion, and many enemies that are just cheaty. Its so not worth.

I play Crusader Kings II on 'iron man' mode and My Summer Car on perma death, although I alt+tab and save scum in the latter just because it's so difficult to not die with all the random stuff that happens.
I like them, but only when it's optional. I've played Skyrim with a permadeath mod and unscaling npcs/equipment mod. It made me play a lot more carefully and it was always a relief to get into towns after a difficult dungeon. Ohh I played with fast travel disabled as well.
Personally my list of the most fair games with hardcore or that should be played hardcore would be like..

Rimworld
Planet centauri
Factorio
Minecraft
Isaac:rebirth
Morrowind
Forager
Recettear
