As for full-length games with optional permadeath difficulties, I'm not a fan of it. Lots of risk for very little return aside from a fleeting achievement.
So for me perma death should be about immersion. In a game easy enough (a game that is focused in being immersive) it can be a good way to make the player more invested in the game and be more careful about what he does. I could like that. But if Perma death is used only for challenge purpose I'm not a fan of challenges and I don't appreciate that, it would be just annoying.
Permadeath is pretty much made for roguelikes/lites, but I sure as hell am not going to put 20 hours into a long campaign, die, and then have to restart the game.
Hardcore minecraft, thats fine. Hardcore terraria, thats not. Like in the past hardcore terraria was fine but now with expert mode, bloodmoon/frostmoon/alien invasion, and many enemies that are just cheaty. Its so not worth.
