Does the Xbox Series X and PS5 use fake 4k?
In the "Ive given up on pc gaming" bait topic, someone posted something about how the new Xbox (and even Xbox One) and PS5/PS4 use fake 4k, and I was curious to know if this was true.

I Googled it a bit and did come up with a couple of topics regarding "checkerboard rendering" before being bombarded with Microsoft and Sony propaganda marketing and basically checkerboard rendering lets a GPU render graphical textures at a resolution, without having to natively render at that resolution as opposed to real 4K which involves taking a full image and upscaling it.

Checkerboard rendering looks nice, but it's not real 4k and the comparison is obvious when placed side by side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNpDoFW87bM&list=WL&index=2

So how does Microsoft and Sony get away with saying their consoles can support 4k?

We'll know when we do. Right now, even the consoles' exact specifications are still not fully determined.
They get away with that cuz those consoles do in fact output in 2160p. They didn't say "every game on our platform will be rendered in native 2160p".

AMD Zen 2 CPU, meaning multi-threading and 64 bit systems.
Likely to be a Radeon RX 5000 GPU with the capabilty of ray-tracing and up to 120 FPS.
It will have an SSD with variable disk sizes and speeds.
GDDR6 Ram and probably as much as 8gb-16gb in size to have enough to run modern games.

With specs like that, it would be a quantum leap over the XBox One in every way.

Ahh okay that makes a little bit more sense. Because yes, as I understand it, with checkerboard rendering, the game itself has to be designed around outputting at 2160p as opposed to the device outputting the game natively at 2160p.

But people will still buy it, thinking they are getting a device capable of truly rendering any game at native 4k.

Yes, but we lack specifics, and it might take a while to determine whether the next-gen consoles can maintain universal native 4K output throughout its entire lifespan. That, and the use of a customized APU might lead to gimped processing power.
The new Xbox will run games at 8K and 120FPS.

What people think and what people buy is up to that people. I personally find image reconstruction techniques really important these days. Back in PS2 days very few games did run in full resolution, most of them used interlaced rendering, and no one cared, people just played games. These days - well, did you know that setting anti-aliasing to "low" or "medium" over "off" in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey improves performance? Once you turn it on - the game starts rendering in lower resolution of some sort, but temporal anti-aliasing hides that so well no one talks about it. Same goes with DMC5 and RE2, those games have interlaced rendering mode, although in those two AA doesn't hide it so well.
My opinion - as long as it can look close to native res, it's fine by me. Upscaling and sharpening is becoming more and more popular these days - NVidia has that, AMD has that, damn ever third-party software like Sapphire TRIXX helps you set up some lower res to upscale from, which can be a lifesaver if a game is borderline playable at native res.

Technically they never did; while the ads for current-gen enhanced consoles make them sound fancier than they are, not once did they promise native 4K for all compatible games.

They aren't.

The Xbox One X plays some games at native 4K.

Which games? You sure it's native 4k or just "checkerboard rendering". Like Halo Reach above, you can clearly see the difference between Xbox One's "4k" and PC 4k. Xbox One is missing a few noticeable differences and is slightly blurrier (especially with distant lod). It's not super noticeable, but there is definitely a difference in quality.
