Or something like "Yonder - The Cloud Cather Chronicles" which has no combat at all and is more about exploration and crafting in a open world. Also a good choice.

That is something only you (and your wife) can decide.
But if it is not important how old the game is this might be more suited then Tomb Raider

Gurumin (which is currently on a Bundlestars/Fanatical Flash Sale if you really want it) is rated 10. I don't specifically recommend it since I put thumb-down on my review after not completing it due to getting too annoyed with it. The overall Steam review score does not agree with me, though.
I do agree with @Kargor about the limitations of the rating system. I watched the trailer and some vids of the Lara Croft & Guardian of LIght game I mentioned in the OP and decided that it would be appropriate for him.
He's played it for a couple of hours under some loose supervision from me and we're both happy about it.
I do quite like the look of Beyond Good & Evil and Portal Knights! Might get them for myself!
Its more linear in a way where you only go in a straight line. There is trading and crafting and you can live in a town. Not really action but still kind of wanted to mention it. Im more likely not giving it the credit it deserves which is why you should check out the store for more detail.
No sure how tech savy gaming wise this 10 year is ? :P
If monsters aren't a problem, I recommend Portal Knights like the guy above (I'm playing it now), and also Terraria. I love Terraria. Tiny little pixilated hero, thousands of things to collect, the building possibilities are endless, mining, building, fighting, fishing.

Or Stardew Valley. Another mix of action and a ton of other activities.

Those three games are all 'cute' rather than realistic, which I would think makes a difference.

imo the newer ones are great aswell , i played XIII when i was below the age of 16 and it wasnt a problem , but for a Child id suggest X over XIII since 13 has lots of datalog text you often have to read to fully understand everything

EDIT:
also 13s story is a bit confusing aswell about evil goverments and so on
EDIT2:
heres a few videos of the 2 games :

I know it got mentioned earlier, but I personally like the game.
That said I get the sense you're probably not looking for this sort of thing. But with regards to this, and the notion that he's "quite mature for his age", though, I gotta say: Don't let him grow up too quickly. The idealistic innocence of a child is something we adults covet, yet can generally only retain precious few shards of, for the sake of our and others' dreams.
Anyhow, most of what I play is something that wouldn't get above a T rating, though I dunno for sure since I've never checked and they're also a lot of lesser-known indie games that pften don't have ESRB ratings. And games I like tend away from aesthetic realism and 3D.
