Old Games that need Resurrection with Today's Enhancements
I've been playing P.C. games since the 70's. Path of Exiles in my opinion is one of the best that I've played and it brought back some memories of some of the games I played way back in the 1970's. Yes, I've been around a while. I fell in love with RPG and Adventure games at the very beginning and now I'm looking back and thinking about some of the best games I've ever played and why they were never brought forward. Like for instance "Starflight ...The Flying Dutchman".

Starflight was a DOS system RPG game created by Several Programmers for "Electronic Arts" during the DOS system era (circa 1978). There were actually two games produced. The first was Starflight The Flying Dutchman and the second was a continuing story or expansion of the game called Starflight the Cloud Nebula.

Both games were space travel RPG games that gave the feeling of unlimited space travel throughout a Universe of star systems, solar systems, worm holes etc with a crew you trained and a ship you upgraded. There were star maps, a decoder, a form of financial exchange for goods and services, etc. This game in many ways was ahead of it's time.

The programmers that worked on the game new something about astronomy. There were a lot of details that in those days weren't in most DOS games. You had stars that were red Dwarfs and some were white Giants. You could find stars that had planets in a solar system and pick one to orbit or even land on. But be careful, some were Gas giants and attempting to land on one would destroy your ship. It was best to train your science officer so he could check to see what kind of terrain, atmosphere, and weather you would encounter before a landing attempt. There were Aliens traveling in different quadrants of this Universe and it would be wise to have trained your communications officer to be able to communicate with these different species to know what kind of diplomacy if any you would have to use to avoid unpleasant confrontations.

Of course it didn't have the kind of graphics that we see today in games like EVE or Starcraft but the game itself and the mystery that you had to solve started you on an interesting adventure that lasted the entire game. And one of the unique things about this game was the sense of distance and freedom to go in any direction on a quest to find out why stars near the galaxy you were living in were exploding (super Nova). The quest was to find other planets that could sustain life and at the same time find out what was causing all the Super Novas. The answer that you find at the end of the game would make a Motion Picture climax and ending worth watching.

I think the creators of POE would find this particular game's open feel and challenges something worth looking at for a future game project. Something that no one else seems to have looked at. Kind of a hidden away jewel. If any of you have played this or other legacy computer/console games that made an impression and would like to see some of these revived in todays more advanced graphics and sound systems I'd like to hear your stories.

Old games can still be played with a bit of tweaking. The last thing we need is yet another wave of remakes and remasteres.

I think my PS4 was a waste of money. Many notable releases were just remasters and those which were not will eventually be for the PS5. Which is also supposed to be backwards compatible, so I can still play them if they are not re-released.

No need to bring this onto PC anymore than it already is.

I don't buy consoles so I can't comment on whether it was a bad purchase. Software wise and contractually PC users usually have it better.

The main issue is that for any period longer than five years there's been huge improvements in average PC tech and developers have better tools to use.

Sometimes the results can be awful. Firaxis is a repeat offender. Its updates of Colonisation and Alpha Centauri were both poorly rated and Civ City - the Caesar revamp - was awful.

I enjoyed the original "Pirates" but the remake was much better.

I'm looking forward to the remake of Startopia.

Every one of the games I've listed above could have exceptionally good sequels made.
Other than Megalomania that just needs a PC Amiga Emulator release - Codemasters apparently inherited the rights from Sensible Software and have no current plans.

The original games still work on PC.

I like how the OP put "Electronic Arts" in quotes there.

Way, way back in my day, we had this "personal computer programming company" called "Electronic Arts", as was the fashion then....
Some games regardless of type stand out among the rest. Board games like Monopoly and Chess are still played because they are just great games that have stood the test of time. The same goes for computer and console games. Like Starflight, and Zelda....Dungeons and Dragons...

Lol! They can't even make today's games with today's enhancements. Feel free to shill all you want though.

I'm just looking backward at games that were great but maybe didn't have all the bells and whistles that some of today's games have. Sometimes, just like in motion pictures, the story gets lost for all the special effects. I think it would be interesting to take an old DOS game, for instance, and give it the sound and graphics of today. I think that it would be interesting to play one of these really great games with all the upgrades.

I don't really wanna read the full OP, but based on the title...

I think re-vamping Arcanum would be sick. It seems like a great game, just didn't age well.

Yes, this was a great game. The dialogue reminds me of that old game Betrayal in Antara

A slightly different swing on "games you would like to see on Steam" so here goes: -

A much enlarged version of Viva Pinata where you can unlock various gardens and your job is to repopulate all the species.

I'm gutted that Rockstar never made sequels to L.A. Noire. It had a troubled development but the end was a game that was critically AND commercially successful and gets a higher positive rating on Steam than GTA V. They could keep the ideas fresh by moving the setting one decade(ish) forward in time each episode. The series would build up to tell the story of L.A. via crime from the 40's to now.

Sid Meier's Pirates. The second version is much improved on the first and I think it's about time for a remake.

Megalomania. Amiga version. This just needs to be released. Its light strategy fits the 2020's vibe.

Freedom Force. The best super hero game ever made. Needs to be relaunched as one major edition every two or three years with smaller DLC every six months.

Someone to buy out E.A.'s PC games division (Gabe ?) so we can go back towards the ethos of Sims 2 and have a Sims that is geared to having fun experiences and not just selling DLC. Plus the game now is so Sim Preppy. Everything looks like a Rockwell vision of 50's suburbia. How about Apartment Life for people who aren't super rich ? Also why not have geographical based expansions - so Sim London, Sim Berlin, Sim Beijiing, Sim Delhi, Sim Rio ?

I think Steam should do a deal with 2K to relaunch Evolve on the PC. Remove the mechanic that players get stat boosts from playing - it made vets vs noobs a complete slaughterfest and with 1 vs 4 game balance is tough. Valve/ Steam's name attached to the project would attract a lot of players and Valve is very skilled at generating money from free to play. No lootboxes but lots of skins to craft and trade. It would also show that Valve can still make a FPS.

I'd like to see a narrative sequel to Stardew Valley where the hero is a gardener battling against the evil empire. He has to do various tasks at each village and then get on his way before the empire soldiers catch up with him. I've got two corking twists if CA is interested.

Yes!! You have a lot of great ideas. Some old games have great layouts and have potential for introducing interesting scenerios. And if moved forward into todays programming framework and enhancements can make for some outstanding revivals. Thank you for your opinion....some interesting input!!

So we're talking about remakes from the ground up utilizing today's new engines and technology? Sure, I'll shoot.

1. Silent Hill (1-3) - Fantastic games and some of the best the horror genre has to offer. The problem? They're outdated, clunky mechanics, controls, and graphics are a deal killer. These games are badly in need of a remake from the ground up, simple remasters won't do.

2. Dark Souls - Yes, I'm all too well aware that we have a remaster. The problem? It sucks and it's a lazy pile of garbage. There are still the same PvP bugs, it's still clunky, and it still has a massive cheating problem. What do we need? A remake with a brand new engine and not a simple half baked, lazy remaster. We're never going to get this.

3. Half-Life (1-2) - These games are an absolute masterpiece. The problem? The outdated graphics and arguably clunky gameplay is nearly a deal killer even with mods. The solution? Give us a remake from the ground up so that the newer generations can experience these two gems the way they were meant to be enjoyed.

4. GTA (3, San Andreas, Vice City) - It's true that they're still absolute masterpieces today and pretty muchly everyone has played at least one out of the three games. They definitely haven't aged well though, and are also extremely clunky. What I wouldn't give for remakes of these. They would also sell well I'm sure.

5. Chrono Trigger - One of the best RPGs ever made, it hasn't aged too gracefully. A remake would be a huge undertaking no doubt, but it would be worthwhile. The newer generations would get to experience a classic with today's modern graphics and other nice bells and whistles.

Full, loyal remakes of that 2nd gen GTA trilogy would be an instant buy for me.
