Profanity Filter
This post is just a minor rant about something irrelevant and likely unworthy of consideration.

It deeply bothers me that now Valve has decided to apply their profanity filter in people's personal profiles' infoboxes, summaries, and name under the username. Instead of just keeping it where it should belong, the forums and comment sections.

Before on your profile, you could type down any profanity word, and it would not be censored.
And this was never really a problem. For the most part, there was only mild profanity there.
But now they brought those little hearts there, too.

I think this filter is more suited for public forums and comment sections, and that personal profiles should just be left alone.

And now, even that isn't allowed. And it just doesn't sit well with me.
Does this bother anyone else, or am I just being too much of a crybaby here?

Interestingly enough, you can still use a profanity word in your main username.

Regardless. What are your thoughts on this?

The rules apply to every part of steam. Including profiles.

I'd say even go to the extent of filtering usernames, is it impossible for people to just swear a little less when it comes to a medium in which just about anyone on the platform can see that what you post or information on your profile.

They already filter usernames. Just not profanity.
Instead they filter out anything with "Steam" in the name in an attempt to prevent scammers from impersonating Steam mods.

Also. In my personal opinion, I think this should be an optional feature enabled by default.
Basically, if you're comfortable with profanity, you can opt to disable it, and only you will see it.
If you aren't, just leave it enabled.

They do this with some games. Mordhau is an example.

I'm fine both ways, although i would prefer it a bit more if they gave us the option to switch it off.

I concur.

The wordfilter not applying to profiles was more of an unfixed oversight than a change in policy. It was always meant to work the way it does now. It's just it apparently took Valve a lot of Valve time to get it working.

If it was an optional feature to have swearing filtered or not for the user then that would be good, would mean Steam could have a more apt filter whilst simultaneously not encroaching on the ways which people communicate with their friends if they simply swear occasionally with them.

The problem is not so much the profanity filter, but rather the fact it takes out words. that are not used in a problematic way sometimes (or general regular talk)

The word "Spoon" could if used by the wrong context be discriminative... should we then censor "Spoon" ?

I much rather, that there was an option to have profanity filter on or off. I also would much rather have that mods acted on reports due to the context in "not just words said" but the bigger argument presented.. The reason this is not done, is because it is hard and sometimes subjective, thus you will have a half baked profanity filter.

I think it is perfectly fine that the profiles are also under the profanity filter btw.

Yeah, it does make sense. I never considered that it could've been an oversight.
Always assumed it was done by choice.

But I still stand with my opinion of an optional filter feature.
There are no hearts on the comment notifications list. You see every word.
Never been a fan of filters.

I'd love if it was an optional thing
It's always a little stupid. Especially when the Steam forum is for a game that's a-okay with swearing, and when you're talking about an actual game mechanic or iconic in-game line with a swear word in it, it inevitably gets censored. It's annoying.

On the subject of profanity filters, Rockstar seriously confuses me. Come on, Rockstar. In a wild west game where the characters blow people's heads off with shotguns or burn people alive, apparently naming your horse "Horey" is pushing it too far?

I don't like that it censors certain words that arguable aren't swearwords, and doesn't censor ones that arguable are.

I believe "damn" should come through just fine.

But I think "Schmuck" is censored.
