If you want to earn money on it, then it might be a different picture... errr sound... :P
But from my personal experience it's much more easy to fit stuff around the melody than making a melody for the beats, etc.
What I do HATE is mixing it all together, soooo bloody boring that it hurts! :P
You kids should have learned this ♥♥♥♥ in 2nd grade.

I usually start by making a chord progression, then add drums and later other instruments and melodies
I'll be spending hours going through 1000s of samples to find something to make a melody out of, to me the melody seems difficult to do because ideas for them are already done xaxa, especially for EDM
Don't try to run before you can walk. John Cage could get away with experimental 4"33 stuff because he was an established master.
Come up with your own variations on Ah vous dirai-je, Maman and the Pachelbel Canon before jumping into the deep end.
Making your own sounds is sometimes better than using samples and presets
I wish I can answrr yoyr question on music but all I do is sing.

That's one of the time traps. You'll listen to a thousand snare sounds only to forget which ones you like and have to listen to them again.
When it comes to percussions you can use a temporary sound and change it later on when you know what range in hertz you want.
You can also start small, make something, lets say 10 seconds long. Then make a couple more and when you feel secure move up to 20 seconds. You don't have to start perfect with full length songs. You can also save them for later expansions.
Remember to save them as zip files, more so if you use Fruity Loops. Having all the sounds and songs backed up in one zip file really helps when changing system. Take it from someone who didn't. ;)
Lastly, there is nothing wrong with taking something someone else made and make something yourself, aslong as you don't try and sell it later. Learning from others is a great idea, be it from what they made or from them themselves.
This is true. Copyright is a very modern concept. The old masters copied or adapted old traditional tunes and each other without shame. Something my greatest influence, Prof. Peter Schickele gleefully drove home at every opportunity.
