Why does Netflix push sexual scenes so heavily in their content?
Watching the Witcher right now and I'm just not understanding why Netflix feels the need to implement so much sexual content in so many of their shows (seriously more than half of their original content is full of this crap). I don't feel like it adds anything to the actual story and there's typically nothing good about it (takes the romance out of things, for example). Are they trying to cater to men or do they do it for shock value? Can someone please enlighten me here? If the story is good and the characters are strong, it's just not needed, in my opinion.

If this post isn't considered appropriate, by all means remove it. Figured it would be interesting to discuss.

Softcore porno appeal for casual people who don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about The Witcher, it looks like a soap opera so it appeals to women, fanboys want to see naked characters so it appeals to hardcore geeks, and having naked people connotes that this is "serious drama." NYPD Blue used to do back in the nineties and now it's a trope.

Besides it's free press. Hell, we're disussing it aren't we?
Yes. Rome and both Borgia series had sex, too.

The only thing that I get from sex and romance scenes, in general, is this: "Oh LoOk HoW aDuLt I aM xDDd~~~!!!!!!11"

It's really jarring when you're watching INTENSE DIALOGUE SCENE and then suddenly they're doing it doggy style, and it's usually doggy style, and it's usually for an uncomfortably long scene where you start thinking things like, "If I wanted this I'd just go to [porn streaming site]"

edit: honestly why is it always doggy style

Exactly.

Oh come on, I know there are some people in here that listen to the dialogue in pornos! 😆
Well there are some where the dialogue is the appeal. Like if you watched it with the volume off you would just see someone talking into the camera.
Some porn though has great production values/casting, such as the Family Guy porn parody where James Deen was appropriately cast as the lecherous sex pest

Top-notch acting you would be missing out otherwise. Only beat by the local soap operas.

I haven't seen either, both looked pretty good.

The only other series I can think of that wasn't mentioned is West World, but that is not all the time.

Because it worked for HBO.

I know two fairly recents shows about the Borgias, and I liked both, but I don't remember any of them having sex scenes. Been a while though. One of the shows must be American, the other was a German-British co-production I think.

I don't like having sex scenes shoved on my face (or romance in general) while watching ♥♥♥♥ either.

But Witcher is known for that. So, in a way, they're doing it right, for once.
Basically, this post, but with an additional thing of "It seems to be endemic to American cable or online broadcasting"

Personally, I find it massively annoying when it's tonally inappropriate.

Speaking of the Witcher: Netflix loves inserting black characters into what would otherwise be a lilly-white Polish tale because...muh diversity.
oh no there are non-white people in my fantasy TV show where magic is real and wars and cataclysms happen that cause people to migrate to white person regions. that's just not on, that's too much like the real world. well. 50% like it
Indeed, darks love migrating to light countries, and then whine incessantly about everything whilst receiving better treatment than anywhere else on the planet.
to appeal to coomers

I mean, in the time of the Borgias, sex was a diplomatic tool, so no surprise there was a lot of that in "business".

Not that it isn't today, but today we like to pretend we've moved past that.

And another point goes to demonizing a normal and healthy behavior among adults.

While I see what you're trying to say, I haven't seen a "healthy" relationship on screen since Gomez and Morticia. Sure, they were weird, but their relationship genuinely worked.
They have the exact same ratings as television shows on Netflix. You can see that the show will have sex or not.

And I've seen more healthy relationships in movies and television then probably exist in real life. Not that I'm saying you should model yourself after people on television or movies. Because there are a lot of crappy examples.

Viewer discretion is advised. And as the late George Carlin said, if viewers had discretion we wouldn't have a lot of these shows.

It's not Netflix pushing it, it's the companies making the content. Netflix isn't subject to the same regulations as regular TV and such, so producers have more freedom for such things.

I'm not a major fan of it being shoved in there where it doesn't make any difference to the story either tbh, but meh.
