No, it can be intense, although maybe that's because I suck at it.

Except for the online versions, those usually end in ties.

The only thing you need to know, is how each piece moves and attacks and that's pretty much it

This. Chess is the deepest game I know of. Been playing it for decades and will always find time to play. Fortunately, I know many other people who are into the game as well. A knowledgeable opponent is always a joy to go up against.

It does exercise the brain, but at the same time it is mostly just remembering a bunch of patterns. Without knowing those patterns, you are just easy prey for someone who already knows them.
