Vectors are great, but for a combat situation I'd rather have a PDW to an SMG. I'd have an FN P90, for it's range and armour-penetration. FN 5-7 can theoretically crack a modern military helmet out to a couple of hundred metres, 9MM and .45 ACP can't do that. It's also a Tumbling Bullet, giving it decent firepower from a small size.
They're not. LMGs are ridiculously heavy, prone to jamming and often need a barrel-change to keep up that rate of fire for long periods. They're designed for supressive fire more than anything else, and for a very specific kind of warfare that seems to be becoming obsolete.
Crimea was the most recent conflict between two modern-day forces, and LMGs didn't make a whole lot of difference. The Russian's prefered strategy was to use Snipers armed with the new T-5000 .338 rifles arranged in three shooting lines - one at a conventional distance and two much further out than have been used in combat before. The snipers pin down a force, and then MLRS flatten that location. Proved extremely effective.
Pretty much.
WWII would've been hilarious if we'd applied Dev Logic to all of the battles.
Exactly. They were originally designed for people who may at some point, accidentally, find themselves having to defend themselves. I seem to remember the M1 Carbine was designed to replace the Colt 1911.
Another thing I find annoying is how .45 ACP is usually portrayed as more powerful than mother, more modern handgun rounds. Factually it's been obsolete for years, as has the M1911. Great fun for civilian use, but as a military weapon? Surely you'd use 10 Federal or 9MM +P
