In other words, everything an old person has ever done, they forget, just because they read a history book 50 years ago, doesn't mean they can remember it.
Short term memory is learning a song on a guitar, long term memory is learning scales in the guitar so in a way, yes an older person may have the upper hand in education because he simply understands a lot more but when it comes to gaming, this benefit is null.
Reaction time is purely genetics and I'm sure older people could come down with disabilities that could impede them.
Your reaction times just naturally slow down with age. I wouldn't think it would have any sort of "major" effect on your gaming abilites until maybe your 50's or 60's though when it comes to things like FPS Games.
Back in the day FPS shooters were about lone wolfing it. Now I am more a teamplayer and doing stuff with friends than trying to get the highest KD.
You CAN adapt, though. The frontline in fps games is for the young. If you are older, then you should stay behind and guard the rear, where the young will charge into your prepared defenses.
At least, that is how i try to play most shooter games.
And I would think they're better at learning new skills.
So any straightforward FPS would likely be dominated by younger people.
If it was a game that required more in depth problem solving, and planning, it would be another matter.
I'm sure there are many older players who are expert at games they've played for years too.
Experience does count for something.
But it'd be an interesting thing to test.
