I watched season 1 of berserk last night and have so many questions.
I know there is something called the "feast" that happens every few years, and I did watch the 1997 anime early last year, and the abridged version movie trilogy a few weeks ago. I know these spirits are like a demon army, and that these feasts are coordinated by these "apostles", at least one of which Guts has already killed (was that one of the four from the 1997 anime?), and these apostles are lead by the god hand. The god hand enemies include deaths herald (I actually don't have any idea whose side he is on), and that other guy guts killed in the end who is going around torturing, murdering and generally making everybodies lives miserable which is just more food for the spirits.
So apart from Guts and his desire for revenge, I don't know who anyone is or what they are doing.
I might need to watch the old anime, and take some time between episodes so the details actually sink in.

fite me.
Just saw this, I apologize, it's mere speculation based on the sheer amount of background of his character so far revealed. When they are rescuing Griffith from prison Princess Charlotte tells the story of the warrior from 1000 years ago, Emperor Gaiseric who was a berserker who conquered the lands under one banner and formed a single kingdom. He was known to have always worn a skull helmet to battle, 4 angels descended and destroyed his empire. Flora also adds more to this theory especially now we know about the forever young people within Elfheim, his relationship with her and Schrieke's suspicions.

As for Void/Skull knight relationship - From hints throughout the series it seems the process to make a god's hand is through the same method. There appears to be much similarity between Guts & Skull Knight and in my opinion where Guts was Griffith's sword, Void was Gaiseric's tactician, when Gaiseric got his kingdom he no longer needed Void, Void summoned the godhand and the sacrifice of the kingdom led to his ascension and the birth as a member & the beginning of the birth of Gaiseric to Skull Knight (or at least obsession with fighting the god hand & wielding the Berserker armor so long his flesh melted away).
dude just read the manga for berserk first
taht was your first mistake
