Uncle Tom was the guy who was beaten to death for refusing to chase down escaped slaves. He was beaten to death by other slaves, at the request of their owner.
You should read it someday. He was the good guy in the book -- calling someone who refuses to chase down people who manage to escape the plantation isn't an insult, but high praise. People like West have, by their own admission, escaped the plantation. Other people still want to chase him down and either destroy him or bring him back to where he "belongs".
