Other countries, other customs
Heyho everyone,

We all know that cultural differences exist and that different countries have their own customs. For example, in the US tipping is pretty standard, while in other countries it's not.

Some of these differences are quite popular while others are not. Share your knowledge, experiences, or embarassing stories about cultural differences here!

We have no concept of plural form in our mother tongue, Japanese. Chinese doesn't have either though.

It’s actually cheaper to eat at a hawker centre than to cook for one person, unless you literally eat only a fried egg with rice. You can get a plate of chicken rice for $3 or less.
I remember it wasn't all that. There were many menus in my order that still costed just about 2 singapore dollars. Even the ramen noodles in hawker centre are too cheap even.

In the United States, it isn't considered rude to look someone in the eyes when talking to them. It shows that you are paying attention to what they have to say and that you are interested in what they are talking about. Actually, it would be considered rude or weird not to look them in the eyes.

But from what I understand, in some Asian countries it is considered rude to look someone in the eyes when talking with them. I think this is true for Korea.

I remember reading a little while back about how a U.S. ambassador had gone to Korea and many of the Koreans politicians weren't making eye contact and the U.S. media made a big deal about it, but clearly they weren't aware that its considered rude in Korea to do so. Maybe the media should practice more cultural relativism, methinks.

Chinese language does have plural form, but mostly for pronouns.

Example:

我 (I)
我们 (we)
你 (singular you)
你们 (plural you)
他 / 她 / 它 (he / she / it)
他们 / 她们 / 它们 (they)

You could technically add a 们 to any noun to pluralize it, but we mostly don’t do that.

My bad. I should have mentioned more specifically, I mean on common noun.
There is no expression such as "apples" or "oxen", in our languages, right?

In India, it's ok to take a dump anywhere you want to, not in the rest of the world
That's pretty much all people do in every third world countries. Even i saw indonesians doing it when I visited there during my vacation trip.

Usually not, unless you anthropomorphize an object, like for a story. The plural form is more used for human-related nouns.

Example: 老师 / 老师们 (teacher/teachers)
not sure if this happens in other countries too but here if you have a dog and you dont want it anymore you can go to a village and abandon it, this results on roads being full with homeless dogs.
American Coke is an abomination made with high fructose corn syrup.

I'll never understand how people can do this... for me, my dog is like an actual sister, she's part of the family and I could never give her away.
Everyone but Scottish, Australian and new zealenders confuse me..... they are pretty much the only cultures I've met where people seem to have common sense and the view of don't screw with people too much, but don't be a wimp when they thump you for screwing with them..... and maybe some Canadians, people from Colorado....
