My favourites were Armoured Core IV and Chrome Hounds. Both technical, brutally challenging and as much about building a mech as driving it.
Hands down the best ever.
I still can't fathom why the new BT game isn't even close. (Oh, that's right, it's just a way for Paradox to try to get as much money as they can out of people - not make a good game.)
MechAssault 2 was the first game I ever played online :) I must've been so annoying. I would've been... probably 11 or 12 at the time.
There is also a little known RTS with customizable mechs called Metal Fatigue. It's not as complex as BattleTech or MechWarrior (the mechs consist of only 4 modules compared to BattleTech's 8), but you have 3 factions with unique mech tech. Also, there is always a chance that a mech (called ComBot in Metal Fatigue) will not be completely destroyed, but drop salvageable modules, which if acquired can be reverse-engineered and produced by other factions.
Not sure if they are the best mech games (especially given that people have preferences in terms of genre), but they are definitely worthwhile mech games.
However Mechwarrior Online (for your browser or Steam) was awesomely good gameplay. But throw in 8 different currencies/points and it became total madness. I had to quit.
I was impressed with Mech Assault 2 though. Gameplay was decent for the time. Missions were a little tough, but they just required practice. Also hijacking mechs was pretty cool. The tank missions sucked though and the voice acting was horrendously bad. The soundtrack was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome though. Very early 2000s heavy metal. Like something you'd hear in the Halo games.
