Newgrounds, WildTangent, Ugo and others were amazing. They had huge selections of games, and they were all free. And being browser based they would run on any potato PC, which made them hugely popular with kids. I probably put more hours into browser games than anything else when I was first starting out, as a kid they were the games I wanted to play.

Wildtangent was fine in the early days. You didn't have to download anything.
