Anyone else into lockpicking as a hobby?
Just curious. No, I am not a criminal. And no, I'm not talking about Skyrim.

why would anyone aside from burglars want to have that skill?
I've let my keys inside the house too many times so I eventually had to learn it.

It's a reasonably common hobby amongst IT and cybersecurity professionals, simply because it's a very physical and hands on way of understanding some of the most basic fundamentals of security - there's no point having a SUPER SECRET SERVER if it's behind an unlocked (or poorly secured) door. You can't expect to know how to secure something properly either, without testing it and knowing how it could possibly be beaten. So you can expect a few more of our forum nerds to pop out of the woodwork with it as a skill.

Apart from that, it's a bit like trying to solve a mechanical puzzle, and it's very satisfying when you manage to get something open, beat a record, or whatever. When you get that pop and something springs open, it feels great. When you do it really fast, it feels even better!

Personally I like watching LockPickingLawyer or BosnianBill. Both very entertaining channels

I think its good to know how absolutely totally insecure things are. Or how not to use certain locks. Like DO NOT use a "TSA lock" for anything other than your luggage. As any dweeb can buy a TSA key on ebay for $5. Meaning if you think your gym locker is safe because you put a TSA lock on it, I can literally open your lock faster than it takes you to put in the combination. No one will think I 'picked' the lock. Bye bye wallet!

I did buy a set of tubular lock picsk on ebay when I lost the keys to my laundry coin op thing. I probably need a practice lock or something but I did manage to get the thing open

LPL is a blast to watch.
Your talking to the ma... i mean person who has no idea what a lock is
I fiddled around with it for a while. More just curiosity than anything. I have a lock pick set and a practice lock. That's not a skill I'd ever actually see myself using.
I didn't even know this was a thing.

But when someone needs to get into a practice lock, you could be their hero!

You can buy Amazon toolkits for lockpicking. They're not expensive either learning lockpicking is useful from a security standpoint. Say if you do hacking you may also learn to do physical penetration testing. The redteam did this when they broke into a US electrical grid substation and took control.

Lockpicking is an interesting hobby.
Keep in mind, owning lockpicks unless you are a member of the police or a locksmith is actually against the law, but it's not something the police are going to go out of their way to arrest you for.

Just don't show your lockpicks to the cops.

Now, I could be mistaken about that, and if I am, please, let me know, but it's just what I remember the last time I heard it being discussed.

There are indeed very good reasons to be able to pick locks.
Illegality of ownership is subject to local law: as an example, in the UK they’re totally legal but if you have no good reason to be taking them outside with you, you can be arrested for going equipped (for burglary). Similar to how carrying around a crowbar for no reason might arouse suspicions.

Relatedly, local laws in the USA vary from requiring you to be a locksmith, to FEEL FREE GO HOG WILD AMERICA #1 and in general it’s a horrible mess

Oh, cool.
You can also break into locks using gallium. If they're aluminium. Which is unironically what "liquid metal" thermal paste is gallium.

Wait... really? Of course it's a thing! Imagine you lost your key that was under your door mat or under that gnome you placed in your garden that was given to you by that one weird uncle you don't talk to at family gatherings and you need to get in your house to deal with a swarm of ROUS that somehow got into your basement.

What were we talking about again? LOCKPICKS yes! Lockpicking is a thing and it is legal as long you are doing it without malicious intent. Otherwise if you were then it would be illegal. But that's another matter entirely.
