What is your opinion of speedrunners?
I honestly don't understand the appeal of it. The amount of trial and error that goes into it makes it seem like it's more trouble than it's worth to me. I'm guessing i'm not seeing the whole picture here so what do you all think? Is it a challenge all video-gamers should attempt, or is it just something a select few can brag about?

It's just another way to challenge yourself. And it's not like you can only be a speedrunner or only a casual player. A lot of speedrunners do like casually playing the games they speedrun, which is part of the reason they speedrun them.

Some people are like snails, some people are like cheetahs, when it comes to time progression in games. I'm just a regular human in speed. :cozycrashfish:
It's an art, a challenge, a show of one's skill and dedication. It is one of the ultimate tests or ways to display the ability which one has to play a game.

I'm a bit on the fence about speedrunning.
On one side, I think it's pretty cool how they can remember some of the weird, complex things that they need to do to skip sections of a game to finish it.

On the other hand, they exploit and break games and rush through everything and I don't really see the point.
If someone really loves a game, I think it only makes sense that they'd want to utilize flaws (or features) in the game's engine to attain and demonstrate a deeper understanding of how the game can be played in a completely unintended way. It induces a pretty great sense of accomplishment being able to strike up quicker times in your favorite childhood game and being able to manipulate it in ways you never could before, showing that, indeed, you have improved.

Speedrunning without ever having played the game casually seems like a waste of time, though.
I don't watch speedruns to see games being finished quickly, I watch speedruns for angry people who speedrun.
Bragging rights
I find it mostly a weird thing. Can't really see any appeal for it myself.
Had a friend that had the fastest "run" in the game "Silent Hill 2" but then he lost it because the games inventory or something like that opened faster using a USA version of the game.
Everyone is born a speed runner. But people grow to have other preferences.
It's fun if you like the game
They make no sense.

Absurd that the most entertaining GDQ runners like Bonesaw are also the ones who end up being banned from returning...

Perfection of a craft, the pursuit of mastery.
Don't see the fun in it, but if it makes them happy.
