Because we don't all live in America.

Because we have 4 additional letters (ä/Ä, ö/Ö, ü/Ü and ß) which need to go somewhere. Years ago, keyboards gained an additional character (€) as well, although that one is not in a position suitable for typewriters -- I'm guessing these don't matter anymore.

It's up to game developers to make sure they get their keyboard-handling correct. In most cases, this can be easily accomplished by not looking at the "final" character, but instead at the "key code" which tends to be independent of what's printed on the key. If you want to show the key to the user, you just translate it through the keymap, like the system does when you hit a key and it needs to figure out what character to draw.

I have £££ and $$$ but no funny EU money on mine.
altG- E is short command for €.
Europeans use usually QWERTZ layout while Americans use QWERTY Layout but both are equal userfriendly.
And sometimes there's no choice if you want a specific keyboard which is only available in other country.

Actually, not really.

Germans and Austrians use QWERTZ. French and Belgians use AZERTY. Everyone else uses QWERTY.

Most of the southeastern Europe (sans Greece and Cyrillic script lands ofc) also use QWERTZ. But every country has its own language quirks that need tweaks to the setup. For example, in the Balkans, you'll need to have commonly used š, đ, ž, č and ć without having to do a mutliple-key press. In German speaking areas, yeah, ä, ü, ö, ß. The Polish love their ł, while the Czechs love their ř. And so on.

It's really to bad that letters don't directly translate. It would be awesome if you could type normally but what comes up on screen is a different langauge. ♥♥♥♥ to day is a no spelling day.

I have a QWERTY keyboard and I ain't American.
That's probably for the better.
it is not because it is american that we have to use it
American keyboards dont have letters or acentsuations that other languages have
