Do you cringe if people use "U" instead of "You?"

I hate it when they use "U", it makes me cringe, here's an example of a sentence that uses "U".

"I didnt even knew it until "U" told me about it."

I wish people would stop using "U".

People misusing the word "literally"

I don't hear people misuse that word. I see people who misunderstand its usage in modern language though (they're probably not misusing it the way you think they are).

I'm talking more of the Leafy-style "literally" abuse. Granted, probably not everyone misuses it to the extent that he does, but it is a thing I hear from time to time and it does annoy me.

Yes, indeed, some people/a lot of people doesn't know the difference between those two.

If you are talking about the use of the word 'literally', such as, "I called you literally a million times" or, "I literally waited a million years"... this is not a misuse of the word. It used to be, but now it has become accepted usage. This has made many people very upset.

And you're making it sound like it's a good thing.

Maybe I'm an old, salty dude who wishes things were like "the good old days", but I don't like what has happened to the word "literally". It used to be a powerful word that could change the context of your entire sentence, and had great joke potential.

"A boy fell into the waste tank! He's in deep ♥♥♥♥! Literally!"

But I don't like what has happened to it now. If you used the word "literally" in the phrase "I literally called you a million times", it implies that you kept track of how many call attempts you made and you physically counted 1 million calls. But that's clearly not what's happening.

"Literally" used to imply a lack of exaggeration. "I literally knocked on every door in this neighbourhood" implied that you knocked on every door in the neighbourhood to the point that there were no new doors to knock on unless you went to a different neighnourhood. Now, "I literally knocked on every door in this neighbourhood" means the exact same as a guy exaggerating and going "I knocked on every door in this neighbourhood" when they probably only knocked on, say, six doors.

But then again, maybe I'm a salty old guy who doesn't like that language is changing. I don't like that the incorrect use of "literally" has become mainstream and acceptable. Now I avoid using the word "literally" and I find myself using other words or phrases to get the point across.

And yes, I didn't like it either when words like "selfie" and "twerk" were added to the dictionary.

If your teacher was an English teacher (or a language teacher if not English), then they failed to do their job, assuming they were grading you on mastery of the language. That's literally their job, to teach you mastery of a language. Not to let you make your own.

If they were a creative writing teacher, then I have no problem with whatever writing style you'd prefer. No caps like e.e. cummings, made-up language like Tolkein or Anthony Burgess -- I don't care. But if that teacher's job is to teach you to master a language and they just let you go off the rails, then that teacher deserves to be fired, as much as a math teacher that lets you make your own math, coming up with the wrong answers and grading them correct.

Because it's like it's supposed to be normal to know what all the friggin abbreviation mean, some peoples make them as they go. Unless you're going to die in the next 10 seconds and you absolutely need to say something as fast as you possibly can, take the time to write the whole word, it's so much better
