It's actually ideal to fake a death when extremely famous, to go into retirement and live in peace without harassment/demand on your back. So it's possible.

If you want another conspiracy theory: Jordy, the man who sparked MJ's pedo scandel, vanished without a trace before the last court case even occurred. Got $16 million and then he flew overseas, without any confirm or deny it ever actually happened. Lawyers are trying to track down Jordy, now 37, after he disappeared in 2016. They ask his sister, Lily, and she said nothing happened, no recollection of any sexual misconduct, but she was only 5 at the time.
