It wasn't Until the SNES the games were closer to arcade quality.
So was the Simpson's Who didn't love The Simpson's Arcade game too?
Yeah, but that was the fashion during the 80's and 90's, everyone was beating everyone up. Why? I don't know.
I meant were we thinking. "Oh yeah, this is exactly what someone would do, beat everyone to death." BUT considering the times and the lack of anything else to do I guess everyone loved those mindless games.
Of course one of my favorite beat em ups was gauntlet legends.
Exactly. I have the same feeling. Nothing to think much. Enjoy it.
Not everyone was beating everyone else, but many did, I agree, and it were their parents to blame, not games (of course).
I'm sure that many bad, nasty parents thought that their kids would have had more chances to become succesful if they were used to behave like that, beating other kids and being violent and overbearing.
The stories of those games usually were stupid and cheesy but usually you had to beat some criminal or something like that.
There was a beat em up game where you had to fight against poachers who kidnapped wild animals, it was almost the same plot as Sonic (except the robots, and the emeralds... and the rings... ok more or less the concept at least was the same), this is not a reason to consider those games bad (Sonic is another one of my favourite games of all time) or the cause why so many kids behaved badly back then.
There were many movies and games that were not realistic, sometimes they were good, sometimes they were just stupid and cheesy, sometimes the plot was stupid but for other reasons they were fun and enjoyable, the only real fault was of the people (and expecially parents) who thought that they could pick only the worst sides of movies and games as their moral guidelines instead of realizing that those products should not be supposed to have anything to do with reality and believed that violence would have been the fastest and easiest key to success for their kids.
I loved Simpsons and TMNT. As to sucking, I don't think they really sucked, per se. They were certainly still in a nascent stage, as were all video games, and they had a lot to learn about what makes a good game. But we have their successors, like the DMC and God of War games, and those can be pretty awesome, and off-shoots such as Souls-likes, which are also sometimes really good. A lot of them sucked, and there was certainly a deluge of them for a while, but there were plenty of good and/or fun ones, too.
