Don't really see how those "sucked" when they basically spawned/pioneered an entire genre. That said, they were most definitely "Coin Guzzlers" that seemed designed to be artificially difficult so you'd die and need to throw more quarters at it to keep playing.
Personally, I really enjoyed Smash TV, Gauntlet and Goldenaxe. They were fun Co-Op games to play with friends/buddies. Which is probably why I like games like Magicka and Helldivers since their basic design is like Smash TV; kill everything on screen with a friend and move to the next one. Working together with people to overcome hazards or hordes of enemies is pretty fun. I really liked Gauntlet since you actually had to prioritize Health/Buff pickups among your friends. Do you let the Wizard get food since he still has a super and is better against those imps, or do you let Fighter get it so he can tank the chokepoint? Though a lot of those early pioneers have caused games to evolve to what we have now.
IMO, "Fighting games" are an entirely different genre, which Streets of Rage isn't a part of. Things like Street Fighter and Mortal Combat are Fighting Games. Those are fun too in their own way. (personally, I'm digging on the "anime" fighters like BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Under Night, etc. mostly but Tekken is pretty great too. Don't much care for MK or SF anymore though.)
Golden Axe 1 is one of my favourite games of all time.
I don't know if you mean this kind of games too or not, if you mean only beat em up with a modern setting (like Final Fight) it is not my favourite genre but there are a few games that I really like, expecially Final Fight 2. I have never been too much into Streets of rage but I must admit that Streets of rage 2 is a very good game and impressed me a lot.
I would never say that this genre suck, for sure usually the stories in those games were horribly cheesy and sucked really bad but they were not important and the games were ok.
Much better than the story driven SJW propaganda walking simulators (if not cutscenes simulators which is even worse lol) that we have today.
Ehhh I personally would have to agree and disagree. Also mortal combat is another great beat em up game.
Time Crisis was one of my favorite arcade games back then, but I was also pretty good at the crane games, if I could find one that wasn't rigged I could get things out with a single try. I remember clearing one crane machine and giving the stuffed animals inside and just giving them to children who wanted them.
If you're really good at crane games, the arcade people will threaten to kick you out if you don't stop playing them after a while.
Fighters are often 1v1 fights between players or computers, even tournaments are a series of 1v1 fights until the other player loses.
Beat em up
Double Dragon
Streets of Rage
Fighting game
Street Fighter
Mortal Combat
I can see the patterns. Thanks!
