So, there is a similarity then to chavs:

It's a fad lifestyle characterized by specific brands, behavior, and terminology (argot, lingo, etc.)

Is it just me, or is it becoming less clear what this is about the longer it goes on?

I can tell you how to be a road pirate. Or a highwayman. But this topic is unclear. Is it a new form of social disease? Do you get it from sleeping with stupid people?

Cool. It's not widely known because it's not a worldwide thing, I'm guessing.

I had (wrongly) guessed reggae because the argot and lingo ("ting", etc.) obviously derives at least partly from Jamaican English usage.
