Is Mass Effect Andromeda worth playing?
After a couple failed attempts to get into the series, it finally has me locked in and I plan on completing the original trilogy through to the end.

I know Andromeda had a rocky start due to the lack of polish and it's widely regarded as not as good as the original trilogy, but is there still enjoyment to be had for fans of the series?

It's "ok" if you forget it's a mass effect game and don't compare it to it's predecessors and expect it to be,,,, you know, good. The combat mechanics were decent though.

As a standalone game with no ties to a franchise, it's a good enough game. As a game tied to the Mass Effect franchise, it's a massive disappointment. One thing that made the ME universe so good in the trilogy, was the lore and diversity of new things. This is almost completely void in Andromeda, there is very little that is actually new. It's a rehash and a sloppy one in that.

If you go into Andromeda without the experience of the trilogy, it'll be much more enjoyable than when you have the experience of the trilogy.

I've played the trilogy enough times before Andromeda and honestly it makes for a nice change of pace from the all too serious threat of the reapers. The pacing is deliberate, as are the worlds you head into as well. You can work to your own speed and take in as much as you like of the planets, missions and storyline.

The politics still exists, but you aren't always scrutinised for your efforts despite Addison trying to state otherwise or Taan trying to talk you to death. At least you don't have someone like Udina back your play only to stab you in the back because you were politically inconvenient to his ambitions to take a seat on the council.
I found ME:A a very lackluster game. The change of pace and the unnecessary "large" planet areas filled with nothing were one of the things that made it difficult to find the energy to finish it. As were the lack of actual new stuff and the story.

No, as a Mass Effect game it's way below par for me.

For me it felt like one of those singleplaye MMO's. Then again, I didn't really enjoy the Mass Effect universe overall. :P

I loved Mass Effect. I probably played through the first game five times before I played the rest of the trilogy. I got five hours into Andromeda before I lost all interest. I don't think it was a bad game, it just didn't really feel like Mass Effect to me. :2019smile:

The gameplay reminded me of Mass Effect 1, but more up to date. It's more "open world" than ME2 or 3, there is exploration in that space car but it's less annoying than ME1 and there's actually things to see on planets. But I still lost interest in it after a while because of story. Since it takes place in another galaxy there's almost nothing to remind you of the original Mass Effect universe aside from the characters that are from the original Mass Effect specieses. But aside from that it's like you're in a completely different universe. Which would be fine if it was actually an interesting one. But I didn't really find any of the creatures and places particularly interesting. Playing through ME1 for the first time was great because you are introduced to this whole universe of different aliens and civilizations... visiting Citadel and those human colonies for the first time and getting to know how the different races are working etc... all memorable parts of the game. But I don't remember anything like that from ME:A. I don't even remember what new aliens ME:A had except from that one city of... things that lived in some jungle and had some weird tradition that hindered your progress, but it was so forgettable that it's all I remember from it.

Only if you can get it for free to laugh at how horrible it is.

Easily THE worst in the series due to story and 'thats stupid' designs but the exploration, graphics, and quest were fun to complete.... be prepared to hate all of your squadmates though.....
How can you hate Drack?!

Man, that's what I was thinking too! Drack is awesome, and Veetra is pretty dang cool too. I could understand not liking Peebee or Liam, though.

Exactly! Drack and Veetra were awesome. Drack is the best Krogan of all Mass Effect.

I haven't played the first three games (except for maybe two hours of the first one), so I can't comment on that. I didn't really like the gameplay of ME1, though. It felt really clunky to me.

Ah yes, Drack, the discount Wrex.

Is every male Krogan a discount Wrex?

How strange. I don't recall stating every male Krogan is a discount Wrex. Just one.

Oh, well. You almost got me there.

I'll say you should try and push through it. The 2nd ME is different and will be worth it.
