is The Epic Store Still Spying on You?
So I want to download World War Z and play it but I remember the controversy that the Chinese company Tencent put spyware into the launcher because they had a 40% stock in the company and wanted to monitor users for whatever reason. I uninstalled the launcher quickly after that speculation went around as I was starting to get chinese emails and some fradulent charge was on my card from somewhere in China. But I wanted to know if anything changed since I cannot find any recent news that says otherwise.

i also heard the controversy that epic is a spy. I was confused if i should use Epic or not.

So I sent an email to Epic and asked them if they are a spy or not. They confirmed me that they are not a spy and are a well established company who works only for the gamers.
So i started using Epic since. :lunar2020hearteyesrabbit:

I bought my first game from Epic last June, and I've never had any problems with them.
(downloading Close to the Sun at Epic...it's free right now and looked interesting.) Never had any fraudulent charges on my credit cards or Chinese emails.

Now last year my husband lost control of his Steam account, his Netflix account kept being switched to Spanish, and his Facebook page kept posting random things. He doesn't use Epic. He got compromised somewhere else. That might have been what happened to you.

Epic confirmed that they made a copy of your Steam information. They said it wasn't their intention, and they were going to fix it. For my part, I really don't care if they do or not with that.

https://www.usgamer.net/articles/the-epic-games-store-is-spyware-how-a-toxic-accusation-was-started-by-anti-chinese-sentiment

There are articles out there like that one that says that Epic spying for the Chinese isn't true. That one article claims that it all came about because of Anti-Chinese sentiment. I think a lot of it is just people who are so blinded by loyalty to Steam that they went looking for something to attack Epic with.

That is probably the best way to decide whether or not you want to use Epic. Go look up the articles and make your own decision. There really is too much bias on Steam against Epic to really get an informed opinion. Although it doesn't look like it's as bad as it was last year.

If you want 100% proof that they aren't spying for the Chinese, you're probably not going to get it...just like there's not 100% proof that they were in the first place. It's all opinions and conjecture. The only thing that was confirmed was that Epic spied on your Steam account.

We know as facts, that Epic broke the GDPD rules. We also know that they have a pretty dreadful PP (even compared to the likes of ie steam)

We also know as fact, that they hacked steam API on users that joined them.. Tim Sweeney said himself that it was a lie and then came out and said it was a "misunderstanding" you see.. they wanted you to give premission to give them the data, but instead it had done it automatically... sure.. it was all just a mistake......

Also Epic is not Chinese, it is an American company.. Tencent is Chinese !!!! But Tencent's biggest ownership goes to Naspers, whom are actually South African... All the "anti Chinese thing" is pretty stupid.. Tencent ie, directly owns a large amount of shares in many big publishers (even ones I like ie paradox) but they also own

To list a few.

Tencent owns
5% of Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard,
80% of riding Gear Games!!
29% of Funcom
9% of Frontier Developments
11.5% of Bluehole
40% of Epic games (directly, even more if you count Tencent daughter companies)
They fully own Riot Games, but people know this.
We could list more and more..

Tencent have also funneled millions into Discord..

The thing is. As I said. Tencent is not the "big corp in charge" Naspers are!!!!

People often don't understand that half their product (not just gaming, but food, clothes, mobiles) are all owned by the same people, the rivals are often fake and part of the same top........

All this however, does not change the fact that Epic Game (in specifics) violated the GDPR, violated several PP (private policy) agreements that you normaly have.. Do you want to hear about their refund policy as well?. As one said, all take data, I agree with that person, but.. Epic store have done far worse than just that, they have litterly hacked people to gain information, you normaly don't give out.. This is highly problematic.

Their security is also lackluster, they also have no shopping cart on their store.....

to play devil's advocate here all stores online spy on you in some way. What they use it for though all that data is another story. Also epic compred to any other PC game storefront has pretty lax security. If you don't wanna get bombarded with like 1000 emails about X wants you to click on X link or X tried to hack into your account making X purchases in X area i highly suggest either using a fake throwaway account and stick to free games.

Don't give them any factually correct info if they do steal them.
As I said, I've got six different storefronts with my main email account. I get the occasional special or deal from them in my email, and I always have the option to opt out: "Stop sending me these specials and offers." So far, in all these years, somehow, these six storefronts have not given my email to spammers. None of them have. I suppose the argument could be made that they could, but they don't.

Also, if I were someone with important information, such as a DOD worker, I would not, of course, use my DOD account, because security best practices. I'm not too worried about China or the NSA knowing anything at all that might be on my computer or contained in my online discussion forums. (Oh, dread! They might find out I'm into chiptune and silly arguments about nature!)
Pretty much

So I have looked at all the proof mentioned and I decided to make up a fake address, turn off email notifications, and use a paypal for the payment to get the free games. I think that is the best to do unless World War Z comes to steam soon.

If they created games I wanted to play I might reconsider.
Right now there is no incentive to install that "thing".

They tried that with exclusives. It worked till people got mad starting at metro exodus with ye old switcheroo bait and switch and steam got wise and put an end to using them as free ad space for epic.

Short term epic probably is the safer option but if you're well established and have a good game and PR going you make more selling eslewhere. Why limit yourself to 1 store when you can be positive it'll sell well everywhere?

You know, too much paranoia is not a good thing. I'm just saying.
There is a limit.
the only one being paranoid here xautos im simply stating how the data trade works and how humble bundle fits in

also being afraid of being data mined and using steam is very ironic just realized that

an interesting accusation, but i'm not going to argue about it as it is your opinion to hold.

I be more worried about microsoft spying on me rather that epic. I only start epic to play games from time to time, while windows is always on and MS knows everything about me, from my surfing habbits, what music I listen too what files I upload to the cloud.

Listen guys, everything you do online is a risk, from online banking too using your moblie phone too watching your smart TV. Don't believe just one company is a risk because you will become complacent.

i use Origin and sometimes Ubisoft so it's not like i'm paranoid about my data security, so it's just a matter of accepting what is in the privacy policies or not.

Epic i won't touch because i want nothing to do with them, period.

Humble Bundle says they will install embedded scripts that supposed to run when i'm on their site and then shut down when i leave, but i can't trust something i have no control over and neither what it does on the drive or how it roots around (or even if it runs autonomously from what is written either). that hasn't been explained in any detail to my satisfaction. so that is a no go either.

i pick these things apart and if they don't meet my standards, they can bugger off.

With Microsoft, i've finally done away with being forced to give up my data to use their OS. I'm on Linux now. i didn't choose to be accepted in their data collection or their spying, they chose to add it.

Microsoft does have a gaming division, so they are both. It is also more than likely they include their data gathering tools in those games as well as the Microsoft logo on the jeweled case.

I trust none of them. But we have no choice if we want to game or go online these days.

Yup, i don't trust any of them either, but this is the world we live in unfortunately.
