When the spread of anime and the late 20th/early 21st century when anime started to spread to the West, it had a lot of appeal, people online, even before chatrooms had profile pictures of female characters and female stuff, I got into anime because it's popular around my generation (zoomers) it's just the fact that anime like Pokemon, Naruto, and other shows were broadcasted on Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and other anime were being translated and dubbed, Manga became popular around this time too, I can agree if you think that anime is out of place in a non-japanese culture, yet it was something a lot of people grew up with and were obsessed over, people have their profile pictures to express their love for anime, or weeb/japanese culture
And Indonesia is far more than some silly cartoons.
Indonesia was under Dutch rule since the early 1600s-1800s, and from what I understand the nation greatly suffered under Dutch rule. When the Japanese came into the picture during World War II, they welcomed the Japanese with open arms, and trained under the Japanese to overthrow the Dutch. Presumably, in this process they adopted many aspects of Japanese culture into their daily lives, such as a love for instant noodles, ajinomoto, and presumably, anime.
Again, I'm not too knowledgable on this subject, so feel free to take everything I just said with a grain of salt.
Indonesia is 85%-90% Islamic.
Dutch rule.
Japanese Occupation.
Burma Railway.

The Dutch attempt to reassert their claim leading to more conflicts.
Indonesia gains independence 1949.
Anime didn't take off until about 1963 with Astro Boy.
