Best metal vocalist?
Personally I like John Tardy (of Obituary) with his fun growling, but I also like Joel Grind (of Toxic Holocaust) , though from what I've seen it seems a lot of people cant stand his vocals? Listening to Sodom's new album I'm also kinda digging Tom Angelripper. Anyhow, what do you think? And no arguing please guys. =P

He's not really part of a metal group but MC Ride hands down. He's incredibly talented, and Death Grips a try.

Couldnt have but that question more gracefully myself =P. Basically just a term in the LGBT community for like a guy that's super feminine, so I basically use it just cause I'm like a guy I guess but a pretty thin line between me and a girl so idk.
And I know at least one other furry who likes metal, but idk how many listen to it really.

Alright, I´m more into gutturals than cleans, but both styles have very very good vocalists, for example Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian.

I´ll do a bit of advertising here and post a link to a Metalgroup that is very active. I´ve posted my response in there. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Metalweekly Feel free to check it out. I´d be glad, if some of you guys join. We´re having a blast with our members.

On-topic: Here´s the post to the topic "Best Growl".

Hm, another very hard question.

For me the whole answer depends on what Genre we are speaking about and if we´re talking about the vocalist´s Live Performance or their Studio Work. There are vocalists out there who wouldn´t stand a chance in other Genres.

I see you mentioned Phil Bozeman and Scott Lewis up there. Both are well known vocalists and became big through Deathcore. Seeing how they proved themself over time, it is very weird to see that they changed their musical work so drastically. Both bands are playing music that is nowhere near the sound they had on their Debut Albums. Maybe this is one of the keys to be successfull. I don´t know. Innovation is definetly needed though (especially in Deathcore, that Genre is dying). Nothing worse than a band that is standing still.

To illustrate my opinion, take a look at Jay Evans:

Band: Ingested
Location: UK (Manchester)
Genre: Brutal (Slamming) Death Metal/Deathcore

Studio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZdJLAC02vk
Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmESYSJa16M (First Song, starts around 0:35)

As you can see, both his Studio and Live Performance sound great. His vocals come pretty close to the sound you hear on their Albums. I consider Ingested to be among the best bands Brutal Death ever has brought forth and Jay Evans plays a vital role in this.

I´m not really a fan of that musicstyle, but in general Deathcore is a Genre where you´ll find many good vocalists. For me Deathcore was always about screaming though, not growling. If you take a look at famous bands, there are many that are mainly using vocalists with a high-pitched voice. Mitch Lucker (RIP) from "Suicide Silence"
Hernan "Eddie" Hermida, former "All Shall Perish"-Vocalist, who replaced Mitch after his death.
Ethan Lucas from "A Night in Texas"
Luke Griffin from "Acrania" (Split-Up), now in "Human Error" and "Scribe of Existence"

I think this is due to the fact that Deathcore originated from Metalcore and back when Deathcore became a thing, Metalcore was on the rise. There were some Metalcore bands who started using Death Metal in their sound. Problem is that Deathcore got a negative image over time. Deathcore got a Stigma (for various reasons: Rude fans, bands that look like Emo-Kids, fans trashtalking against other Genres like Thrash Metal, big problems in the scene itself [Drug-Abuse etc.]). The Genre also went for a crushing sound and rather bland and shallow lyrics, which kinda defeated the idea of Metal.

Nowadays, the trend in Deathcore is going towards growls and breakdowns, many bands are influenced by Slam/Beatdown/Brutal Death, because overall Deathcore is strifing towards a more crushing sound. You can see this with bands like Iconoclast with Crody Brooks.

Ricky Hoover from "Suffokate" (stopped making music)
Collin Jeffs from "Aversions Crown" (stopped making music)
CJ McCreery from "Signs of the Swarm"
Jamie Hanks from "I declare War"

I guess you can see where this is going. For me this is one of the signs that this Genre is going downhill. Since bands don´t know what to write anymore, they recylce the hell out of each other. Who can write the most brutal breakdown? Who can tune down the guitars to the lowest point possible?

I once found a comment on youtube that describes the way Deathcore works at the moment in a sarcastic way:
"More of the same trendy, slammy stuff? Another clone band that sounds the same like dozens of others? Lyrics to hide your insecurity behind them? Pretending to be death metal? If the answer is yes, then welcome to the "magic" world of deathcore."

I will leave stuff like Pig Squeals out of this discussion, since we´re talking about Growls, but keep in mind that more different vocal styles mean more different ways to write music.

Piq Squeals, Tunnel Throating, Inhale/Exhale Growls/Screams, Grunting, Shouting etc...
Most bands combine these things. That´s why bands only using one vocal style are kinda in disadvantage, in Deathcore, Brutal Death, Slam and its consortes at least.
It is hard for bands to write something interesting in these Genres, since most stuff sounds the same anyways ultimately. A downtuned guitar sound limits the guitarist in writing decent stuff. Since most stuff has been heard in one way or another, you´re kinda forced to write some repetative stuff.

And this is where I´m out. Don´t get me wrong, I enjoy Slam etc. but I wouldn´t be able to listen to this alone. These Genres have few bands I really enjoy.
I love progressive music, technical music (as long as it isn´t TOO technical, Rings of Saturn aren´t really enjoyable for me anymore. Melody>Technique.
I´m kinda a hypocrite when it comes to music. I enjoy Progressive Music, complex songs and great lyrics. And yet I´m listening to Slam with its dumbed down music that mainly focuses on rythm and retarded lyrics (Just as an info, I see Slam more like a "joke". Can´t really be taken serious).

That´s it from my side again.
Feel free to discuss.

With kind regards,
-Toeli

Ooh I did forget about Jamie Hanks (didnt know his name before this). I'm not a super big fan of that particular subgenre but I do like his growl. I'll have to check some of those other guys out also. Thanks for such an indepth and detialed response! =3
You´re welcome! I hope it´s not too boring, haha.
As I said, I´m not a huge fan of the core-ish stuff either, but I can listen to the stuff mentioned above ;)

Nah, not boring at all, I love to hear hear what other people think. And yeah, the only core-ish stuff I've ever really enjoyed is I Declare War and sometimes Oceano, but hey that's just me, whatever people like that's what they should listen to imo. =3
Well, try some of the vocalists above. just click on the names, links should work. I guess, some might be for you. That´s what I listened to before the whole thing got too boring for me.

Thanks for your input =)
Personally I'm not a huge fan of like the clean/clear lyrics (other than Tom Araya), idk if that's weird, but I'm more of a growl type guy, but Ozzy does have a nice sound =)
