Why do some video games have on default the left ctrl key for crouching?
I don't understand why game developers make the left ctrl key the default key for crouching. Do game developers think people can reach that key with their hands? Its way to far. The left alt key, and many other keys would make a better choice to set as the default key for crouching. This is due to the fact that people usually need to use the crouch function a lot in many games. Thus, the crouch key should be easy to press.

Games these days usually use the wsad keys to move. Imagine moving using the wsad keys and needing to constantly switch out from crouching and standing. This would be a nightmare. Its worse when the crouch key is not a toggle.

Can someone explain why game developers make the ctrl key the default key for crouching?

Its close enough for a laptop like what I use, to hit with your pinky
Also game devs are aliens so they have long fingers :heyred:

Seriously, my pinkie doesn't work real well and I tend not to type with either left or right ones, but it still works just fine for pressing ctrl. K/M controls have been like this for nearly 20 years, so... *shrug* your hands need exercise?

Or, you could look into the options and rebind it to c or something, or if there's a toggle instead of press to work.

Personally I can reach it fine with my pinky but for comfort I have it bound to caps on my desktop and alt on my laptop
Also is this really such a big thing? I never put much thought into this, n-not that i think about other things b-baka

It just bothers me that game developers make the ctrl key as the crouch key. Almost all games have the ctrl key as the default key for crouching. I'm just like wtf, the courch key is essential to the game and you game developers make the key that far from the other keys? Are you making your game into a hand stretching excerise? Were you drunk when you made the game? What have you been smoking? Or do you have usually large hands?

I think this practice of making the ctrl key the crouch key should stop.

You have no idea how much that bothers me in games like Far Cry, crouching is literally life or death and i sometimes spazz out and forget where L ctrl is

left alt is easy to hit for me, I hit it with my thumb. My thumb usually presses the space key which on default is the jump key. In most games players can't jump while crouching. So I let my thumb be able to hit the crouch button easily, because it has no other better button to press while I'm crouching.

I need left ctrl as crouch to hold it down and sneak, I dont use it as toggle which Im sure your alt crouch is too toggle

I don't know but I'd rather have it on C.

I can reach ctrl just fine but holding it makes my ring finger respond slower. Not by much, but it's enough to feel sluggish in frantic situations.

I'm still trying to figure out why W, A, S, and D are the default keys for directions... I mean, there are actual arrow keys on the other side!

Its most likely because most people are right handed. I personally think that using the arrow keys for directions would be weird to set as default because most people are right-handed. Left-handed people that I know play their games using the buttons on the num pad. They use the 8, 4, 5, and 6 key to move their character.

Most games i bind it to v because my thumb rests on top of it.
