Where did the neckbeard stereotype come from?
Why are they associated with being handholdless, kissless virgins?

It's not really about the beard alone. A guy can have a poorly maintained beard or not shave much and still be a good guy. Weight isn't really a good indicator either. I often don't use the term because it could offend the genuinely kind guys. Some may not always take the best care of themselves, but they're not bad. I prefer other terms.

That being said, the problem is that many "real" neckbeards (by popular definition) have absolutely awful and unlikable personalities. If you just browse the internet and forums, you'll find that the neckbeard appearance is often something they strive to look like. Maybe it's because they feel they fit in with each other. Some even go so far as to wear fedoras, which is the look I'm talking about. I have never seen, nor have I met, a kind person like that. I don't usually just call them neckbeards though.
Some beards cover up facial scars or other facial deformities.
They don't need to have a neck-beard. Or a neck. A contiguous jaw to chest wall of flesh counts too!

They're all over the world. Where I live, gay Scottish neckbeards greet prey with "M'laddie". Neckbeardianism is a way of life. Not a 21st century thing either. I'm sure most of us would agree that Billy Mitchell's a neckbeard.
Probably the idea that having poor grooming habits might indicate not being good at social interactions.Low ability to understand how others see you, or ability to understand other people's feelings.
There was a well known meme of a fat slob with a neckbeard tipping his fedora.
That would be one of the first presentations of the stereotype.
Then again some people do not care what others think, they dress and groom as they see fit and could not care less how others see them. For them it is not about fitting in or not fitting in, it is only about what they want to do.

Hey, I don't tell you how to wear your stinkin' makeup, you don't tell me how to shave.

Say thanks todd for not properly DRMing doom eternal. Saved alot of people money

alright jokes aside

neckbeards are typically stereotyped as fat virgin losers that don't bathe or buy essential commodities but invest tons into ♥♥♥♥ like games figurines tech mt. dew and doritios to snack on.

South park i do believe popularized it with the make love not warcraft meme where the guy had no life was an overweight person who spent every hour of every day playing WoW and never exercised and thus gained enormous weight and subsisted on doritios and sugary drinks so they give you technically a small energy boost to keep playing and alert and you don't have to cook them as well as being low in price.

Then the photo of the M'lady guy with the fedora went viral and pretty much solidified this stereotype.

Then there's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fedora craze. The hat that hard working businessmen in the 50's or 60's wore neckbeards hijacked it and they ran its reputation into the ground.

The neckbeard (now associated with cucks and soyboys minus the receeding hairline) comes from not shaving. Again these people or the stereotype of these people are they invest a ton into frivilous ♥♥♥♥ but never into things like soap shampoo and shaving kits. They just let it grow and thus the beard is messy, unkept, and just plain ugly.

Then they started whiteknighting what we call today as thots (Back when it was any female online but now it's mostly popular girls or Egirls/tiddy streamers).

okay

as for colored hair idk exactly where these sjws femenists and just insufferable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ girls got them (not all just the majority that have colored hair). Maybe they saw one too many 90's anime and wanted to mimic them or stand out and draw more attention to themselves.

But the meme is from/started from a couple of videos/incidents/photos. There's the redhaired short haired girl who got triggered with the office secretary glasses. Then Zoe Quinn which became another poster child for colored haired weirdos and jackasses (for women).

Theres also the fish mouth syndrome but that's irrelevant (fish mouth is where you don't closer your mouth entirely and your teeth and upper lip show / are still raised like your face got paralized and can't entirely close your upper lip.

So while not EVERYONE single person who follows or has the what you described will be exactly like them (impossible even in today's world it's 100% impossible in a large enough group smaller groups fair game).
BUT
it's the stereotype for a reason. Just like all goth kids wearing black. It's just the ....norm or standard for that subgroup or social group. All preppy kids wear lettermen jackets or are cheerleaders for the most part. Most "thugs" wear flannel shirts or white shirts and dirty pants on purpose. The list goes on.

Ironically though people tend to be social outcasts if they don't follow a norm even by the same group. So like if you're a fit and muscular guy wearing a fedora have a neckbeard and whiteknighting you'll be outcasted by several groups. The neckbeard community the gym bro community normal society, etc.

So in essence you may start out differently but eventually you'll get shaped or molded depending on how well you adjust or changing certain habits. If you don't for sure you'll be outcasted if you don't conform enough.
In the old days it used to be side burns and now its neck beards i guess.

This may also explain (sort of) why the most insufferably toxic neckbeardian windbags (not all of them) have avatars with blue haired anime girls. And why they hate ordinary women who dye their hair a non standard colour. That's a trigger for them. It's culturally appropriating Japanese anime girls' patented style.

At home in the darkest hours, their ten thousand year old nine year old elemental sorceress print body pillow provides only a rudimentary comfort in a cold, cruel world.

I almost feel sorry for them (but not quite).

It came from elementary. Kids can be cruel. Perhaps they were projecting?

Don't all stereotypes have a little bit of truth into it?

I found proof that neckbeards existed in antiquity.
