i'm just interested in knowing more, sometimes it means asking the question directly.

Well, I'm sorry. I've snapped, just honestly tired on how nothing can just simply be when a topic asks for your opinion on whats your favorites.

As for D1 and D2.... one of the first games to be an rpg that had its own changing levels. It was huge. It was like D&D coming to life for the very first time. You could miss repeatedly, you had to find gear, you had to repair gear, you can ignore certain quest, you can choose characters that the GM allows, you can outfit that character however you wanted. You can be a warrior with high mana, a mana shield, and shoots fireballs. Or have a rouge with a golem to face tank.

It was more of an RPG than most RPGs of the same period. Yeah it may have gotten repetitive but for its time.... that was huge.

As for the story, again, there was lots of story there. D1 did an amazing job of telling back story to an extent that didnt just seem like it was throwing stuff at you randomly that people wouldnt mention. You learned of a slow corruption happening and how a king slowly went insane and it goes into a lot of detail on how it all happened. As for D2, not only did it tell the story of how the canon warrior couldnt contain the demon but it told a much larger story of each city and the problems the cities had before the evil. Then you learn all the fates of the first games characters without the game directly saying hey, that rouge from game 1... yea thats blood raven... that mage at the end of act 2 the summoner, yup wizard from d1. No one had a happy ending and at the time that was huge and highly uncommon.

interesting. i might look around and see if D1 is around and try get into it again. quite honestly it was a long time ago and D2 overtook and all i remember of the time was D2. so my bad there.

I mean... it only is the most well known RPG of all time... to say its a 'pure' hack and slash is kinda of a ignorant comment....

I guess stats, gear upgrades and managment, currency management, spell management, optional side missions for bonus gear and extra just doesnt make it an rpg...

Id be willing to make an argument with games like Kingdom Underfire, Ninity Nine Nights, or Dantes Infenro but to call Diablo a PURE hack n slash is just.... spiteful.

I mean what makes an RPG an RPG? Diablo is heavily referred to as the grandfather of RPGs was it the first? Not even close. Was it what set the standard of MOST rpgs.... yea. it did.

Most known RPG of all time....... Even back when it released we all knew it was a hack and slash, that is even what it was sold as... Hack and Slash.. That being said we could easily call it a action RPG, sure.. but as I said you could call almost any game a true RPG if you call diablo one.

Albeit I had fun with it upon release diablo never became as good as the other cRPG's ie that released before and after 97.

Calling Diablo a grandfather of RPG is silly.. its the grandfather of hack and slash. It did impact abit on the Action RPG combo, but that was because of its innovative system, not because of splended RPG features.
Again it is a matter of how we define RPG, that is why I accept that you want to call it a action RPG, because that label is fine.. But calling it a grandfather of RPG, that just makes me laugh, even in 97 diablo was a RPG light.

I guess next you want to tell me Fallout was inspired by diablo albeit Fallout also released in 97

Okay, now I know you are just reaching here.
When you say 'even when released WE all knew it was a hack n slash', shows you are just going off on your own tangent on your views. Its an RPG. You select a character, go on a quest, you have optional quest, you have constantly changing levels, you have loot tables, you have rolls for damage and loot, you can make any class into the other class. It was D&D turned into a game.

As for most well known RPG of all time..... if you are really going to challenge that then there is nothing here to even remotely discuss because you are simply disillusioned. When RPGs are mentioned the kings are usually Fallout, Diablo, Final Fantasy, or Elder Scrolls. You ask anyone over 25 what is one of the most well known RPGs of all time Diablo is going to most likely be the number one answer. There is no arguing that. It heavily influenced the RPG market more than any other game in its category.

And no. Diablo didn't influence Fallout. Now you are just trying to be silly. Ugh like I said, it BLOWS my f'ing mind that people just can't leave crap be. Its an RPG. Thats a fact. It might be a hack n' slash RPG but its an RPG. To chime in and act like it isn't is just ignorant and petty to begin with -_- Can't ever voice your favorite anything anymore without someone going TECHNICALLY........ like it matters -_- jesus can't just let people say what they like without trying to tell them their wrong in liking it.

By that argument F1 2018 should be a contender to best RPG. You pick a character and go to race (on a quest) Again I am not disputing that you can't say its an Action RPG, I am disputing that it has alot of traditional RPG features and that it was the first to do so.. I played games on the CMD64 many years prior to diablo that was more advanced and more focused on the RPG elements. Again it is a matter of opinion here ofc, but Diablo have had little influence on the RPG elements, however as I said it made a whole new genre HACK AND SLASH. Because that is what you do in games like diablo, you hack and you slash.

It was nothing like D&D plenty of other games were prior and after, unless you want to compare a 99 games like P:ST and BG to Diablo.. in that case we have no more to talk about.
But even older games had similar focus. In many ways diablo is similar to older games like Brandish, Zelda, Wizardry (that could be the forefather of Diablo), etc etc etc etc.. D&D games existed in dungeon form alot earlier than Diablo "decates before" and with more focus on the RPG element.

I had fun playing Neverwinter Nights in 1991 as well.. Again don't get me wrong.. Diablo was fun and mass played as well, but not for its RPG element, it was played because of its Action!!! "The hack and slash part" and the fact you could loot loot and loot more than ever.

Again I am not disputing that diablo has light RPG elements it does, but RPG is not the focus of the game.. It would be like claiming a open world game with driving, was the best driving game in the world, even if well it was not the focus (also with lower quality)

You say it is silly that I say Fallout is not influenced by diablo and a better game.. but you just called Diablo the forefather of all RPG's this means that you think Diablo is more of an RPG than Fallout... come on... do you seriously think this??
Counter strike
So we're essentially asking 'personal favorite RPG of all time' here, since there's no objective way to settle this.

I'll limit it to games I've played.

Best RPG:
I'm going with Final Fantasy VI. (That's right. 6.)
Very close 2nd: Chrono Trigger.

If we're counting Action RPGs:
Skyrim.
Would Undertale count as an RPG?

If not, Skyrim without a doubt.
RPG-7.... Duh, what kind of a question is this?
Diablo is both a rpg and hack and slash game. But the main focus was always to find better gear and to level up etc.A pure rpg is baldurs gate in my opinion

hard to say , paper mario 2 , final fantasy 10 , final fantasy 10-2 , i would rate all those games atleast a 98 - 100

and , it might not really count but i think super paper mario should be in that list too ,but its more of a platformer with rpg elements than an rpg

but if i had to pick a single one , defenitely paper mario the thousand year door, that game is so close to perfection if you ask me , literally the only complaints i have is : make other partners as universally viable as goombella , make the refight in glitz pit actually hard and make levels over 30 have a purpose in some way ( maybe a bonetail plus fight , or give rawk hawk hyper forms like the master from the first

but thats only post game stuff in a game that already can last you a very long time , the base game is already perfect, i just wish there was more post game (maybe boss refights too ) otherwise its perfect
The best ff game is viii and vii.Sadly the creator of the ff games left after ff9 but ff10 was great too but after that it wasnt ff anymore

to be fair , i never played the older final fantasy the oldest i played was 9 , and i didnt beat that yet

but i still like the new games , i just think 10-2 did the open world and sidequests so great , plus the way you see how your actions matter towards the end ( like if you managed to make the ronso not go to war
Dragon Age: Origins.

I agree with FF7. That was the only RPG that made me cry.
