Dungeon Siege 2
Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect 1
Diablo 1..... or 2 UGH such a hard choice.... 2.
Diablo is pure hack and slash.. But again I guess it depends on how much you limit the "RPG" if Diablo counts, then most games are RPG's
Oblivion over Morrowind? ...... that is a first
I mean... it only is the most well known RPG of all time... to say its a 'pure' hack and slash is kinda of a ignorant comment....
I guess stats, gear upgrades and managment, currency management, spell management, optional side missions for bonus gear and extra just doesnt make it an rpg...
Id be willing to make an argument with games like Kingdom Underfire, Ninity Nine Nights, or Dantes Infenro but to call Diablo a PURE hack n slash is just.... spiteful.
I mean what makes an RPG an RPG? Diablo is heavily referred to as the grandfather of RPGs was it the first? Not even close. Was it what set the standard of MOST rpgs.... yea. it did.
get into the D2 mp aspect, reach level 99 and repeat all the chapters over and over, you'll quickly realise how repetitive it is as a game. there isn't much role playing elements when all that matters is the top tier gear and your rotations and a DPS race. not that there was much a storyline involved in the first two games anyway and neither does it really matter what role you choose.
Well, thats completely subjective.
You play something like Oblivion over and over it just repeats. Same dungeon with a slightly different layout. Same gear over and over and over.
Crunch down to what Diablo 1 and 2 were for its time yea... it was an RPG. You had a story, you rolled for damage, it was basically a dungeon and dragons in real time.
As for D2, I dont know. Lots of different characters and different builds. Seems like you picked a role and can write an entire character sheet and make up your own background as none of the characters had backstories originally and you can build them however you wanted.
As for much of a story there was quite a lot of story involved.... if you played D2 closely you'd find the fates of every character from the first game. Honestly it was one of the better stories for its time I'd say. As for what role you choose, I mean... we can get into FF then and how no matter what you do you're 100% locked in place and you have no say over your character and the ending is always the same.
I don't know. I'm just trying to wonder why we are even trying to argue if D1 or D2 is an RPG or not honestly. I posted my favorite RPGs and as usual someone had to chime in and act like something in my list doesn't fit the topic. Like seriously. No one cant just ENJOY what others put down. Someone has to take part of it and try to argue that it doesn't fit the topic when it clearly does. -_- Can't give an honest opinion on what your favorites are without having someone try to chime in and argue how something shouldnt be in your favorites list for this category
Also why hasnt anyone said kotor yet?
i'm just interested in knowing more, sometimes it means asking the question directly.
Neat
I actually prefer Daggerfall, Oblivion and Skyrim than Morrowind.
I don't like the setting of Morrowind (my favourite setting is Cyrodiil) and if I am forced to deal with older RPG mechanics I prefer Daggerfall a lot and I also find it more impressive compared to its time.
Most known RPG of all time....... Even back when it released we all knew it was a hack and slash, that is even what it was sold as... Hack and Slash.. That being said we could easily call it a action RPG, sure.. but as I said you could call almost any game a true RPG if you call diablo one.
Albeit I had fun with it upon release diablo never became as good as the other cRPG's ie that released before and after 97.
Calling Diablo a grandfather of RPG is silly.. its the grandfather of hack and slash. It did impact abit on the Action RPG combo, but that was because of its innovative system, not because of splended RPG features.
Again it is a matter of how we define RPG, that is why I accept that you want to call it a action RPG, because that label is fine.. But calling it a grandfather of RPG, that just makes me laugh, even in 97 diablo was a RPG light.
I guess next you want to tell me Fallout was inspired by diablo albeit Fallout also released in 97
I did not like Daggerfall very much tbh. But it depends on what you look for, it is just not very often you see Oblivion on top. I am also abit embarassed to say that I disliked Arena at first.
It is nice to see people that like Oblivion however, it was always the bashing cow of the series im0
Well, I'm sorry. I've snapped, just honestly tired on how nothing can just simply be when a topic asks for your opinion on whats your favorites.
As for D1 and D2.... one of the first games to be an rpg that had its own changing levels. It was huge. It was like D&D coming to life for the very first time. You could miss repeatedly, you had to find gear, you had to repair gear, you can ignore certain quest, you can choose characters that the GM allows, you can outfit that character however you wanted. You can be a warrior with high mana, a mana shield, and shoots fireballs. Or have a rouge with a golem to face tank.
It was more of an RPG than most RPGs of the same period. Yeah it may have gotten repetitive but for its time.... that was huge.
As for the story, again, there was lots of story there. D1 did an amazing job of telling back story to an extent that didnt just seem like it was throwing stuff at you randomly that people wouldnt mention. You learned of a slow corruption happening and how a king slowly went insane and it goes into a lot of detail on how it all happened. As for D2, not only did it tell the story of how the canon warrior couldnt contain the demon but it told a much larger story of each city and the problems the cities had before the evil. Then you learn all the fates of the first games characters without the game directly saying hey, that rouge from game 1... yea thats blood raven... that mage at the end of act 2 the summoner, yup wizard from d1. No one had a happy ending and at the time that was huge and highly uncommon.
