even if a mp4 could contain a virus it's would have to find a way for your current music player to actually run it's code.

MP4 is a video file but it is really more like a container. Inside the container is the "codec" that runs/decodes/explains how to view the video and audio. This is why some devices that can play videos in the mp4 format can still fail to play the video. The computer has to support the codec inside of the mp4 too.

However all file types, jpg, png, mp3, etc. have basic information that identifies them as what they are... or at least what they claim to be. With enough knowledge you can create a fake file that actually has other stuff. I'm talking about something more complex than changing the .mp4 extension at the end of a file to .docx or whatever. Most anti-viruses can catch publicly known tricks. ALWAYS SCAN EVERY SINGLE THING THAT YOU DOWNLOAD FROM AN UNTRUSTWORTHY SOURCE BEFORE YOU USE IT. Your anti-virus can be aimed at an individual folder very easily! Please use it!

The answer is yes but I'm a lot more interested in why you're asking. Are you concerned about something in particular? Do you think you might have a virus? Do you want to be sure that you don't have a virus?

Every file have virus. It's either good or bad virus. Same as our body.

as far as I know no document file can be a virus, only a program (or a system file like dll files) can be dangerous

to my knowledge only .exe can contain viruses, unless it just runs by itself after being downloaded maybe?

Possibly, but unlikley, more likely to have a virus in a pdf file, easier to exploit.
