I think it is similar to when Microsoft developed Windows on some of the older gen consoles, maybe the Dreamcast? Where it wasn't great and Microsoft had no real reason to do it, but then kind of did just to get some insight to see how a game console works to then use that to some extent when making the Xbox.
I wouldn't count this out as some low key spying to try and pull the Xbox out of the ditch.

I think it's for the whole cross-play thing that Microsoft and Nintendo are doing. I hope stuff like this becomes more commonplace so I can play with my brother without buying another console.

Hopefully Nintendo is now seriously looking at getting out of the exclusive console game and just start releasing their games for any console.

I love some Nintendo games like Zelda, smash bros, core Mario games, etc but I won't buy a 400 dollar ♥♥♥♥♥♥ console I'll play for a month and never touch again for a small handful of games I wanna play.

They're good games, but they're not that good.

From how I took it, it will just make partying with people cross platforms, chatting and becoming friends much easier.

So it's just the social aspects of Xbox Live that's coming to Nintendo.

Edit: The good relations between Microsoft and Nintendo make fun memes though, especially when Sony is involved, they were invited to join along but declined.
