Fancy rats are mostly harmless, its the wild brown and black rats that are the carriers of various diseases and pathogens that caused the black death and what keeps us weary of those rodents.
I did have a guinea pig once. Didn't last long, though.
Though non-domesticated rats are filthy and may carry diseases so they get exterminated before they can cause issues.
