SW: 4 good, 2-3 half good movies, some meh serieses, ton of books, plenty pretty good.
BSG: old series forgettable, then mini+1 season great then run out of material and writers never found their asses. So 3 additional seasons really annoying, though still worth to look for great cast/actor performance/music. Then 1 good spinoff. Overall fragment of material compared to the others.
ST: ~30 seasons mostly golden, movie points: 5 for 6 tos movies, 2 for 5 tng. 1.5 for new movies, minus lots for recent kutrzman BS. Full book coverage on old series material plus tons of good extended.
ST wins hands down, again not even same arena as the runner-up (even getting bonus for more great music).
Battlestar Galactica i have never seen, and star wars turned into a moldyarse
As far as sci fi shows that are serialized but hold up far better on their own merits I would say Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9.
Star Trek asks much deeper questions and holds far greater long term interest for me.
Star Wars has been kinda crap lately. Its older good content is still REALLY good.
Star Trek would be my choice by far.
How is the modern Star Trek? Is it alright to start with Picard? I've never watched Star Trek before.
if I was given an actual choice with multiple options I would pick Stargate universe
Look at how many things we got today that came from star trek. Cell phones, automatic doors, tablet pc's. Just to name a few.

The new series has betrayed the spirit of the older lore in many ways. The new shows suffer from trying to be Battlestar. They are dark, gritty and pessimistic, whereas the older shows have a beacon of hope. We as humans have gone to the stars and have largely conquered our darker natures, but yet we still struggle with our nature and the dark nature of others. Discovery and Picard seem to have abandoned that and are overcome with darkness. They throw out F-bombs as if to say, "See! We've grown up!", when it's more of a regression.
Don't get me wrong, they are not bad shows. Just not Star Trek. Star Trek was special.
The old lore covered some dark topics as well, and asked why someone could do this. It goes into the mindset of the enemy, of the monster. It could do all this while teaching a lesson and not being preachy about it.
I would say watch The Chain of Command pt 1 and 2 (TNG) and Duet (Deep Space Nine). From there Decide what you want to watch. Discovery is dumb entertainment, but doesn't reach the heights Star Trek should reach. I haven't watched Picard

Me and most trekkies had Picard on hold waiting relevant input. Eventually I got it and found the first episode okay. Then it started descent right on the second. And third arrived at full Kurtzman state, I threw in the towel here. For those not yet started suggestion is clearly stay away unless you like STD and other K's mind-killing nonsense.
Too bad, as it had some potential and could have been a resurrection with someone else at the helm.
And if you want to see something LIKE ST was go with The Orville.
Not seen BSG
The only Star Trek series I ever watched was TNG.
So Star Trek I guess.
