Mercs might not good for protection, especially in an long-term SHTF scenario. I see some ads for isolated bunker communities that promise their own security detail. Hard to imagine people choosing to stay loyal for a bunch of rich snobs when they could take what they wanted.
They might be able to hole up in their shelters and pray that the mercs won’t take the shelter for themselves. The proles might have more practical skills that be transferable or barterable in the long-term. A dentist might have a hard time trading for goods, especially when needing a specialized staff and materials. A construction worker could always work as a farm-hand.
And California?! Southern CA gets most of it’s drinking water imported from outside states. It always has a rickety-as-hell infrastructure on a good day.
