Can a strong enough magnet kill you?
I was watching xmen 2 where magneto killed a guy by sucking all the iron out of his blood.

What i want to know is can a strong enough magnet suck all the iron out of your blood and kill you?

Ps, there is about 4 grams of iron in the human body.

if magneto can move the iron in the blood of a living human, then yes.

if a real life magnet(ic lifter) falls on you, then yes.

otherwise, no.

it's not the type of iron you think it is. it's iron atoms that bind to proteins. there is no iron bits in hemoglobin, nothing to attract to a magnet.

So its not metal? Its not the same material as an iron fire poker?

Iron or no iron, a "strong enough" magnet can definitely kill you. Your whole body is reliant on chemical bonds that could be deformed under an extremely strong magnetic field, and your body is reliant on countless electromagnetic processes which would probably start to operate pretty differently if a powerful magnetic field aligned everything rather than letting ions orient themselves randomly.

I have no idea what level of field you'd require to see such effects - it's possible it's more than we're even capable of generating currently, I'm not sure. Just talking in terms of "if you could hypothetically generate any field strength you wanted".

The iron atoms in your fire poker are the same element as the iron atoms in your body, but arranged differently / attached to different things, so the materials don't have the same properties.

But nah, body iron is a nutrient. Not like the metal, so it's not like someone can pull it out of you.

Again, and why are people ignoring this? A Magnetar can do that.

I wish people would stop thinking iron loses all it's magnetic properties when it's not in a solid metal form.
Magnetars exist in space. THey are basically upgraded Neutron Stars.

Look them up. THey most certainly can do what Magneto did in X-Men 2. But more painfully.

ALso, he had Mystique add iron to his body.
Ah, I didn't see the post before hand. My bad, while I am not sure if you are right, you seem to know your stuff.

As I pointed out, the Neutron Star, and it's upgraded form, the Magnetar, to coin a phrase, are strong enough to wreak havoc on the human body via their magnetic field alone. And the Magnetar will literally rip the iron from your body.

So, yes, even iron in different shapes attached to different things are indeed affected by magnets. I'm going to need heavy citations to provide evidence that the iron in blood won't be magnetically pulled by something with a field greater than anything you can comprehend that actually exists in nature. :P

To say it is 10 trillion trillion trillion times stronger than an MRI field might be a gross underestimation of the sheer magnetic field of a Magnetar.
I haven't said the iron in your body isn't "affected by magnets". I said its properties are different, because they are. Not all iron complexes are ferromagnetic like iron metal.

^also, trust the comics guys.
if it's in the comics, then it mus be "true'.

All I know, is I trust the scientists who study Neutron stars and Magnetars in space, and have said that it will pull the iron from your body.
I assumed that meant the iron in your bloodstream.
I never got how scientists can examine things in space and know anything about it, how do they know if a magnetar doesnt consist of candy?

i also wonder the same thing.

scientists claim of discovering the presence of oxygen molecules in a very distant planet/galaxy yet could not find potable water source in africa.

Magneto didnt pull the iron from the blood of the guard, that few grams would have not been enough. Mystique injected the guard with some extra iron before that and Magneto pulled that extra iron out.

Yes i know this but whats stopping him just using the 4 grams?

I doubt he could have escaped this cell with something only the size of a penny.

It would still be a good bullet.

Yeah but not enough to levitate him out of the cell that was suspended in midair, try to balance on the penny.
