Why is having no social media scary?
Like...I'm someone who has NEVER sustained any social media. I was never on SC / Instagram / TikTok (blegh) / Twitter / Insta and Reddit (Sparingly)

I was on FB once in the early noughties and the teens; but I periodically delete my profile all the time; sometimes that sticks for YEARS. I recently deleted the one media I had - Whatsapp. To reach me, send me a good old fashioned text.

But anyways, that's not to say I mean to "make a statement" or anything, or i'm "hiding something". I have my reasons...I have had a very rough decade, and especially 2016 on wards; I've lost many people and very recently lost my dog. I have never been more suicidal than I am now, and I'm fine saying that. I've been clinically depressed for the last 7 years. Thus, some random acquaintances trip to Bali or some hoe's morning coffee being "lit" is never going to have anything for me. Social media isn't inherently bad, but I've never been in a state where I can enjoy it and not feel like trash about myself.

Now I can't really express any of that to people I meet, often for the first time; It's a lot, it's a "downer" and "smile because it happened" etc etc. So when they wanna keep in touch, I;ve always had to say I can't link up on media, just text me. I get very mixed reactions, mostly negative.

Some people look at me like "Oh, you're one of THOSE". Some say it. Some get visibly nervous and never even text; some get put off and assume I'm not keen on staying in touch. Some have also gotten suspicious???

Why is this?

About that part where you mention people think you won't keep in touch, typically people without social media actually don't keep in touch, I've met a few people like that and they all didn't use social media.
maybe its the feeling of isolation?

Social media is extremely over rated. Own it.

It mostly allows people to find groups they think they belong to, turning everything into a giant echo chamber that inhibits any kind of intelligent conversation or growth.

It's allowed PC and SJW culture to jump to the forefront of the news, making the average citizen look like a maniac.

Truthfully, there is very little positive that it offers at all.

There is some argument that there are situations you can learn from it, such as a pinterest craft or something of that nature, but those types of things existed long before everyone on the internet had to have a profile for every web site in existence.

It's cute that everyone has "internet friends", but good luck with that the moment your internet is turned off.

Social media makes it possible to message each other for free.
For people who use them it is annoying to send sms because it is less convenient.
Aside from that I personally think that social media is more "scary" than no social media. There is definitely something creepy about it. Not something really dangeorus usually but still it feels weird seeing all those people posting all kind of internet garbage for strangers to see.
I mean all those motivational quotes and other cheap crap like that meant to look deep or meaningful, this is really dumb and weird imo.
Celebrities (or even just pseudo-celebrities) posting just their own photos and selfies on instagram for fanservice is ok, they are using those shallow services in the most appropriate way imo, creative people posting creative stuff like drawings or photos or self made toys it's good too I think this is a very good way to use those sites, but it is very disheartening to see what most people (and some celebrities too) do with those sites.
Just my opinion :P

Some colleges and even jobs look at social media to get a better idea of who you are.

I don't use it, and don't plan to in the future, but I think that has something to do with it.

I have had the same experience. Even some people in my family no longer stay in touch
with me as they would have to do it the difficult way and call or txt me.

Reddit is just a forum not social media like FB.

I never had any of them no Twitter no Facebook no what snap no tikkie tokkie no instagram.

I only have steam-GOG and use reddit forum for my PC hardware discussions.

I have Youtube channel but i only used it for a game MMO that stopped so i quickly made videos of quest so fans can still enjoy this game with pure gameplay.

Have phone for calling thast all.

Reddit is absolutely social media.
I never used any social media. never seen the point of wanting to know what my friends are doing every single second of the day.

Anyone who is scared of you because you aren't on social media 24/7 isn't worth your time.

Although I have Facebook and used myspace when it was booming been a long term user of social i kinda gotta agree here.

It's not so much for meeting people these days and keeping in touch as it's mostly for news and memes.

the two main reasons i still use it is for news and memes and i also gotta agree that twitter, facebook, insta youtube, etc (Twitter and Youtube more though) have allowed lunatic SJWs to constantly get into the news and that's really not a good thing.

Sometimes i wish Myspace/Facebook was never invented and we still relied on MSN/ICQ for chatting to people or using random chat rooms lmao.

but i guess Facebook/snapchat was bound to be created one day.

bro don't bother urself for that. i've also never had any typo social media and people have reacted so weirdly, but listen, not having an account on somethin doesn't mean u r anormal. it's only bcause people is used to see that everyone they meet has at least one account on whatever you imagine. that's what people naturalize. ♥♥♥♥ those close mind3d people

Socializing in Public = Social Skills & Engages People In Groups & Activities
Social Networking = Anti-Social Skills & Risks Your Privacy
Social Media = Social Skills & Engages People In Groups & Activities
Smart Phones = Anti-Social Skills & Makes You Dummer

Difference? Is getting involved, & interacting with those who your speaking with...
Social Networks don't have this, but Social Media does...

Social Networks are like FaceBook, Twitter, & such...
Social Media are like PlayStation HOME, Nebula Realms, VR Chat, & such...

Smart Phones take you away from your Friends, Creates Car Wrecks,
too much use of Spell Check, & things like asking Assistants for Help too
often, can make Smart Phones Smarter then you... Eventually making
you Anti-Social & Very, Very Dumm...

At least to me, this is how it seems to be...

Do you agree? or Disagree?

There are times when I feel like I'm the only one sitting, looking at my surroundings, and not at a phone or w/e. (I do bring a handheld video game system with me from time to time when I'm out and about)
Not sure what's scary about being disconnected from social media, although I do treat Steam as a social media platform. It's just another means of communication.

Considering this topic, I'm curious how many folks here don't talk extensively to anyone besides their most immediate family, and then just take in the day (the good and bad) beyond whatever these digital social platforms provide. Reminds me a bit of that dating topic:

Technology is pushing things forward, and causing some things that used to be viewed as "normal", to now be viewed as "abnormal"; akin to what Mathius said.

In short: you're normal in a good way OP, try not to stress too much on that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
