Any ww2 planes that is viable to the modern day?
Now if you remember me,i made a thread about ww2 tanks being viable today and i got some good answers on them being now just used as infantry support and all SHT's just better off not being a good choice.

But after that whole thing i just thought if ww2 planes like the BF109,p51 mustang, spitfires and the russian YAK-9t would still do well in the art of modern war.Or bombers like the flying and super fortress (B-17 and B-29).

Now normally an F22 would just come in and take a dive to a whole bunch of em and just shred them to pieces but i would like to see what they would fair now being used other than just being in a museum collecting dust rather than flying high up in the skies like they used to.

If WW2 Planes are still viable then they will still be using them.

You'll be surprised on how weapons can be almost obsolete in a span of years.
Any of the German Jets

and as for weapons being obsolete in a span of years i don't really have anything to say apart from being replaced for a newer or even better one.

Maybe obsolete isn't the word I'm looking for...

For example... back in 1860, some Armies were still using Line Formations and Volleyfire because most Weapons back then were Single Fire Rifles. But after 30 years, Bolt Action Rifles and Machine Guns became more common and Armies can now fight in small detactments to reduce casuaities.

Well that added weight and having to reload it all at once is already a pain to begin with so theres that.So i guess then they might be in some use but not to the same extent that they were used before in the 1940s.

because whats a mustang with 50 cal. gonna do to an A10 with 30mm autocannon.
Are we talking about fighters or planes in general? I don't think ANY militaries use prop fighters for anything other than training and the jets of the time were TERRIBLE, but the DC3 is still used in a lot of places and will probably stay in use for some time.
none honestly, at least by US standards

M2 Browning .50 cal machine guns are still being used and produced today, almost a hundred years in service.
ever heard of the the Philippine Air Force?
we are still using tora-tora planes from WW2, UH1 Sikorsky Helicopters(/Tanks/APC from Vietnam War)
They're utterly obsolete, they were designed for a kind of warfare that no longer exists. The only way to make them viable would be to modify them so comprehensively that you would have nothing left of the original aircraft.

All modern air warfare is BVR: Beyond-Visual-Range. A modern jet like an F35 can fire over the horizon; it doesn't need to engage in a dogfight or even maneuver. Fighters like the F22 are stealth snipers, prowling far from the battlefield and at high altitude, picking off target from over the horizon using guided missiles.

Against that a P51 Mustang would be totally useless. Your only option would be to deply so many P51s that all your opponent's aircraft ran out of ammo. And even then, you're going to lose dozens if not hundreds of planes.

Attack planes like the Stuka and Sturmovic would stand more of a chance, but only against third-world opponents who didn't have Surface/Air missiles or MANPADs. And even against '50s anti-air guns you would take major losses for very little effect. Dive Bombers are comically vulnerable to semi-modern automatic cannons. To say nothing of RPGs.

Bombers would suffer the worst. Agonizingly slow and painful visible, they would be spotted and slaughtered shortly after take-off. Their bombs would be impotent against anything bar civilian targets. As they were even in WWII. The Allied bombing campaign achieved very little then, it would achieve nothing now.

From the planes listed on Wikipedia, some of them are prop, but it looks like everything in their Air Force was developed in the 50's or later.
Prop itself isn't a huge problem. The USAF is actually bringing some Prop attack planes into service over the next few years, for counter-terrorist Ground Attack missions and Forward Air Control.

The problem is Electronics. WWII aircraft basically don't have any. They don't have any proper navigation equipment, no sensors of any description, no RADAR. They're limited to whatever weapons you can strap under the wings and aim with a gunsight.

And unfortunately that makes them pretty-much useless, even in places like Somalia. Since even the most underfunded rebel army will have semi-decent Russian machineguns and AA guns on Toyota trucks.

15,000 P-51 against 187 F-22, guns only. Would be interesting.

Depends on the model of weapon or vehicle in question.

There's actually a country that still uses the M24 Chaffee.

Some of the hardware has a niche use, considering how light vehicles like the M24 are they would be good for a niche use in airborne operations as air-droppable vehicles in low intensity conflict zones.

Indeed, they are the standard MG our tanks and most vehicles use.

I said it once before in another thread but just because it's old doesn't necessarily make it obsolete.
