Why do people preorder?
I have never understood it and I assumed after a while people would start to wise up so let me ask you preorderers why do you preorder?

I think it’s both for exclusivity and a person’s innate impatience. The “I want to play it and play it now” mentality. The former taps in the latter and sweets the pot by offering swag like skins, accessories and other baubles.

The downside to this is that the success is dependent on reputation, imo. If the game is part of an established IP or developed by a particular developer, I think that heavily factors into if the player wants to preorder or wait a few months after release. (Product/Brand loyality)

An example: Bioware was such a well-respected name that I preordered Mass Effect 3 the moment it was available. I had already enjoyed the first two, so ME3 was a no-brainer for me.

In spite of ME3, I preordered Andromeda... and I swore never to preorder anything from them again.

(Years earlier, I dodged a similiar bullet when a friend talked me out of preordering "Aliens: Colonial Marines". I've been thanking her ever since.)

A cynical part of me wonders if the publishers/devs know that they are sending a flawed/incomplete product and depend on the profit boom of preorders before the initial reviews skewers future sales. (Not unlike how certain movies had forbid movie reviewers from seeing it prior to official release.)

Did she like Fallout 76?

She doesn't play video games unless it's like old school Mario kart

Is it possible, or in your current position to refund the game? Maybe "secretly" give it to someone else?
Pre-ordering is a gamble put that money down hope when that loot box opens on launch day you get legendary and a not common game.
I only preorder food :GDEasy:
i preordered my oneplus phone just because i really wanted to have it
I'm impatient. If I'm reletively certain the game will be good (trust the dev, had good reviews from YT channels I watch, ect.), I'll probably pre-order it so that I don't need to remember to later. It hasn't happened yet (thank god I'm not into fallout), but if the game does turn out to be bad and I preorder it, I probably won't buy the next few installments or even write off the franchise all together.
There are games that have locked content which is only available if one preorders it
Before digital distribution became a widespread thing, most people bought games on disks. So preordering made sense back then since it was possible to run out of stock if the launch was popular.

Nowadays, the only legitimate reason to preorder is the exclusive preorder bonus.
Because I can and I don't care.

I honestly still prefer physical copies. I don't think I would ever pre order something digitally. I don't think you can get your money back from those pre orders either like you can with physical copies before the game releases.

You can on Origin. I think you can now on Steam now that they offer refunds, but I know from experiance that before they did, you could only get credit if you wanted to cancel a pre-order.
I’m a sucker for t-shirt bonuses.
one reason a preorder makes sense , is when you have money at that time , and know you will buy games , like just cause 4 , tomb raider and whatever other games , if you have money to spare in summer , go for it , you get the same refund rules for a preorder as for a normal purchase , so if you have lets say 1000 euro in summer , and would have around 800 euro in winter , when you also have to buy presents for family , buy something for a few holiday meals etc , it might be better to buy the game in summer , if you would waste money on other things otherwise and not save it until the games come out

then you can have everything normal in winter , get all your games on the launch day , and not worry about the price , take me for example , my birthday is in june , i usually get a couple hundred euros there , if i know i have a game i want to get in winter , i can buy it with spare money i always get around that time , and not have to worry around christmas

edit:
also , i bought a new shiny monitor on black friday, if i had any games i wanted to get this year , i would have money problems now , but if i just preordered them back in summer ( and instead spend 50-100€ less on the summer sale) i wouldnt have the same money problems

Midnight launch at Gamestop.
I only preorder off of amazon, and thats because they offer a deal where they will charge you the lowest price the object reaches during its pre-order window, it could be a scam for all I know.
Because I want something.
