Why do people preorder?
I have never understood it and I assumed after a while people would start to wise up so let me ask you preorderers why do you preorder?

I think it’s both for exclusivity and a person’s innate impatience. The “I want to play it and play it now” mentality. The former taps in the latter and sweets the pot by offering swag like skins, accessories and other baubles.

The downside to this is that the success is dependent on reputation, imo. If the game is part of an established IP or developed by a particular developer, I think that heavily factors into if the player wants to preorder or wait a few months after release. (Product/Brand loyality)

An example: Bioware was such a well-respected name that I preordered Mass Effect 3 the moment it was available. I had already enjoyed the first two, so ME3 was a no-brainer for me.

In spite of ME3, I preordered Andromeda... and I swore never to preorder anything from them again.

(Years earlier, I dodged a similiar bullet when a friend talked me out of preordering "Aliens: Colonial Marines". I've been thanking her ever since.)

A cynical part of me wonders if the publishers/devs know that they are sending a flawed/incomplete product and depend on the profit boom of preorders before the initial reviews skewers future sales. (Not unlike how certain movies had forbid movie reviewers from seeing it prior to official release.)

The only times I preorder are when I want to make a video as soon as the game is out and I actually get a nice discount on a website before the game is even out
I pre-ordered Borderlands 2 because it appealed to me a lot. But these days, considering how stale to me games are, I prefer NOT to otherwise I feel I may have wasted money on a game that was hyped and got disappointed.

It's usually due to hype. I'm not so hyped on games anymore so I don't pre-order, but I believe people pre-order due to hype.
Because people can.
I very rarely pre-order but i only do it if i know that im going to really enjoy the game, like Spider-man.
I never pre-order because I always either buy games that are 20 dollars or under or wait until the game goes on sale.
Pre orders are not inherantly bad in themselves. Some studios devliver what the promise and you get a discount. I suspect some people view it that way. Unfortuntely, so many studios have underdelivered or outright lied to their customers it;s just no longer worth taking the risk imo.

Only game I think I pre-ordered was pokemon ultra moon on the 3ds eshop.

And man was I ticked off that youtube hackers and hackers had the game 1-2 weeks early.

I already had pokemon sun so I knew I'd like it, so it wasn't like a blind buy for me.

I do it for a virtual hat bonus!
It's not about needing to "wise up". It's a choice I make and I preorder many games, not because I don't know what's going on and don't recognize the business practice. There are some game series that I have grown to love like Just Cause, Total War, Battlefield, and Fallout just to name a few. Every one of those series have gone downhill from the nostalgic perfection I remember from that game that got me hooked on them.

I know it's going to be full priced, may run and look terrible, and may just be a terrible game. Eventually I bail, like on Call of Duty years back now, but most of the time I find some enjoyment. I get a little preorder "bonus" and can play early sometimes, which in of themselves aren't a reason to preorder, but I'll take it.

I have 60 games in my Steam library and other games through the painful other stores. Of just those 60 I have 11 games with 4 hrs or less playtime in them. I waste money and some games I don't like. ( I do return a few). I preorder because I can and yea, it doesn't make sense, but we are all illogical beings sometimes and money isn't an issue so I don't care to hold back.
Depends on the track record of who i'm buying from. I'd have preordered BF5 based on the others. Same with DMC5. usually it's so i can get it installed first thing incase i have work and stuff.
I haven't pre ordered a game since oblivion. But my girlfriend pre ordered red dead 2 and fallout 76 for our anniversary because our anniversary was in summer and she knew I wanted rdr2, and knew I liked the fallout franchise (I wasn't interested in 76, and it turns out its even more awful than I expected but rdr 2 is amazing and I don't have the heart to tell her 76 was a waste of money).

That's the only legit reason I can see for pre ordering. It's not like they run out of copies of the game, that hasn't happened since like 2005.

She doesn't play video games unless it's like old school Mario kart
No reason ever to preoder, except if they give beta. And pre-order only when beta is available.
Not half year later.

If it's something I planned on getting anyway like Spider-Man or Red Dead Redemption 2, I don't really understand why not. I've never paid anymore for a game I've pre ordered and typically it comes with a couple small in game bonuses.
