Why are movies not what they used to be?
I have been watching movies all break, preferably my favorites:

- stand by me
- the goonies
- Ferris buellers day off
- back to the future

Why do I feel like movies in the ‘80s were way better then movies we have today? I swear nothing that has come out in recent years compares to those classics. Can you name some?

I feel the stories in the older movies were better a lot of times. Think they focus to much on CGI for some movies, the older cameras seem to make them look better to me to.

That and the actors in a lot of the older movies seemed like more realistic people. That or I just like how people looked more back then.

Also liked a lot of the lighting and effects in the older movies.

Originality and comedy don't seem to adpat properly in modern days, judging by what comedy stands out for today... THAT offensive.

Movies in the '80s were mostly cheese fests made to appeal to tweens.
We were already well past the point of making great movies such as Citizen Kane, The Grapes of Wrath, Casablanca, or The Wizard of Oz by then.

probably because you grew up with them

my mother says the same thing about movies that arent black and white

Because the only thing coming out these days are sequels and remakes. 80s movies are original.

With the power of streaming and the internet you don't really have to care about new stuff when there's so much good and accessible older films you can watch. That's not to say that good new films don't come out though. Plenty of good new films get released too.

Simple reason, they can get away with a crap story line by covering it up with CGI, just like they can with the actors.

2 Star Wars sequels
3 Superman sequels
3 Indiana Jones movies
2 Jaws sequels
2 Back to the Future movies (I'd also consider the third one from '90 to be an '80s movie)
4 Star Trek sequels

The '80s were littered with franchise movies. Very original.

It all stems from 07-08 Writers Guild strike. Many of the better known writers quit around that time. Thus it made the industry suffer to the point that it still hasn't recovered from it.

I think it's pretty simplistic to attribute a decline in film quality to one event. Besides, there's more that goes into a film than the writing.

because they aren't made how they used to be

Exactly, you can make a movie on your phone now.

Edit...

The Lord of the Rings was fantastic because of CGI, but it stayed true to the Novels.

Because you look back at a few classics from the 80s and compare them with all of 'todays movies', ignoring dozens if not hundreds of boring, campy, pretentious and plain bad movies of that era. Since I do not know much about your taste except for the movies you have mentioned above and I personally have lost my taste for most movies that could be compared to your list, I can't really name movies that 'compare to those classics'. But movies like
- labyrintho del fauno
- Shape of Water
- The Arrival
- The Judge
- Logan
- Birdman
- Moon
- Kubo and the two strings
- The Imitation Game
- The Theory of Everything
- The Martian
and many more make me quite content with 'todays movies'

As a child, you will always have fond memories of films you watched and back in the 1980s, we didn't have internet or soical media, so tv was the only thing we watched apart from playing out.

While there are certainly modern movies that I like, I do get awfully annoyed at them sometimes. It feels like if it's not a remake then it's something that I have to watch, like, ten other movies to be able to fully understand what's going on in it.

OP, have you seen Kingsman? I thought it was really good and I think if you're looking for something with a bit of a classic feel it may just hit the spot, no promises though.
