Anime is just a term used to differentiate Japanese animation from others outside Japan. In Japan itself, anime is just a shortened word for animation and refers to all types of animations, Japanese or otherwise

Anime is short for animation. Cartoons can be in animated form, and so are also called animation.

Pretty much, yup.
American animation simply isn't anime, that includes Avatar and the likes.

The variety of genres, drawing style, and depth are not proof that anime is not a cartoon, but the hallmarks of specifically Japanese cartoons.

They are two simular but different mediums. Cartoons are pretty just their own thing for the most part. Anime mostly has big ties to manga, light novels, and even video games (mainly visual novels).

Historically, animated movies produced in Japan had fewer frames per second. This might have been reason for people to call these particular movies anime movies.
