They’re similar forms of media that tell different kinds of stories. And obviously the countries of origin will heavily influence the themes within.
Then again you have things like family guy, futurama and all the things Netflix are coming out with so maybe they are 🤔
Well, I guess that since most of the fan base comes from countries other than Japan, people are not informed about such things, hence the confusion between genres.

Anime (アニメ) is indeed just a name for Japanese cartoons.

“animation” is not a word which can be written in Hiragana, because it is a foreign origin word. Animation in Japanese is アニメーション、 or アニメ as a short form, hence the title.

The term “cartoon” grasps a wide range of various media, and does not necessarily represent family-friendly content, since a cartoon is simply a fully animated movie.

In terms of what? They are both drawings at the end of the day. Even 3D animations like Jimmy Neutron is still considered a cartoon even tho it’s computer rendered.

Fun fact but RWBY isn’t an anime. It’s made in America.

I'm shocked myself
I mean they are LITERALY the same thing...

But anime used to be less accepted in the past so the term usage still remains 🤷‍♀️
Anime used to be a genre of cartoons, now anime is a subculture

Some people make the argument that anime is created by shooting drawings frame by frame. But then why doesn’t anyone remember anything about plasticine cartoons? They were created in the same way, only instead of drawings they used plasticine decorations and figures. And no one suggested introducing new terms for them.

There Are American Cartoons & American Animation,
Then There Are Japanese Cartoons & Japanese Anime...

The Difference Is This...

Cartoons Are Like Goofy Children Stuff Like Flintstones
American Animation Is Strong Atmosphere & Has More
Work Put Into It, With More All Round Experience Geared
Twards A Totally Different Audience, Like
X-Men 90's Or Spider-Man 90's, Incredible Hulk...

Japanese Cartoons Are Like American Animation,
But Made More Like For TV Audiences Like Samaurai Jack,
Or Sorta Like American Cartoons Made Like Powr Puff Girls, Edd Ed Eddy, Tom & Jerry,
Where As Japanese Anime Is Made More
For Cinematic Appeal With Stronger Characters & More Powerful Stories,
Like Nana, K-On, Bleach, Naruto, Texnolyze, Experiments Lain...

Ehhh, It's Something Like That, ~_~

They Say The Audience It's Geared Tward
Is How You Tell The Difference...

Like American Cartoons Are Aimed At Younger Kids,
American Animation Is Geared Twards More Adults...

Japanese Cartoons Are More For Kids,
Japanese Anime Is Geared Twards More Adults...

However, I Don't See It This Way, Because Anime
Isn't Really Defined By Age Group, It's Sorta All
Over The Place...

But That Is Basically It...

Does Anyone Agree??

Cartoons are for kids, anime is for weebs. Huge difference.

Pretty much. If other's want to get pedantic you have to say that a cartoon is adult for it to be a cartoon for adults whereas you don't need to make that distinction for anime because they are all for weebs.
Besides, you know that there is such a thing as puppet cartoons, right? So, everything that happens on the screen is not drawn at all! This is real animation in the original sense of the word, when they take a model (doll) and “bring it to life.” There is nothing drawn here at all, and with the logic of anime fans it could be called not a cartoon, but normal people understand that this is also a cartoon, since there are no living people in the frame.

Nah not really, Archer and South Park clearly aren't made for children.

Many parents perceived cartoons as entertainment for children, and when parents paid attention to them, some kind of adult cartoon, they began to complain about the fact that they showed such children.

Becuase these type of cartoons just did not manage to keep up and even back in the day they were not rly THAT popular unlike how anime was and is nowadays... 🤷‍♀️

Anime has a term for itself becuase it was way too popular, just not rly accepted (this is why you have terms like "weeb" v:)
