This isn't quite true. There were people who would walk down the sidewalk or sit on a subway with an open newspaper (or a book) held up like a shield to keep the world out, but that wasn't anything like what we have now.

I didn't like cellphones and have never owned a smartphone, so I see this all of the time. A sea of people, every one of whom has their faces glued to a device that bathes them in a blue glow...I just stand there and wonder sometimes, curious to see if any of them bother to look up at all?

I've never seen anything like this before.

Have you ever considered that those people do in fact have a life outside of their phones? While they might be overly absorbed in their personal devices, they still are people, and most of them still work as "members of society". This is merely another downside of the modern world, and it's nowhere near as bad as people like you think it is. The world has had its own issues throughout each age of history; while phones are mainly a problem of today's world, there's been loads of problems that came along in the past that were arguably worse. After all, if you see this as so much of a problem, take a look at what you're doing, posting on an online forum. That in itself is something not much different from communicating on a smartphone and can facilitate similar problems.

A smart phone is just a little computer that fits in your pocket....... Aaaand you're on a computer, right?

Oh, get off your high horse. Smartphones are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ miracle of modern technology and I can't stand all the pretentious kids and/or old farts who think they're the work of the devil trying to separate people. It's literally a sophisticated computer, right in my pocket. I can access almost any knowledge in the world I might need to know, or have a basic calculator, or keep a shopping list, or...the list goes on, really. All in one handy little device.

And please, is it really antisocial if it allows me to talk to my friends or relatives who are several states away? No, I forgot that smartphones are satanic. I guess I'll just write grandma a letter and wait for her to get back to me in 3-6 business days instead of getting to talk to her right now.

The only time smartphones are an issue is when you're driving.

If you wanna be absorbed in your phone while going about your life more power to you, but for ♥♥♥♥♥ sake, pay attention to the road and the flow of traffic before you leave 3 car lengths spaces in front of you!

outside of a few games I personally don't use my cellphone that much since a while ... often I don't even think about bringing it with me when I go for a walk.

when I was a kid I did had some of the very early PDA that was could pretty much just be used to list phone numbers and act as a calendar to list your appointments.

the main problem with modern society is how much our industries polute the world while we are all going on with our daily life like nothing bad is happening to our planet.
