[QUESTION] VALVe's Steam community guideline
Why VALVe forbidden to discuss about console emulators? Curiousity kills me.

because an emulator is like having a pirated copy of a game, and discussing about piracy is forbidden.

emulators are legal , but roms usually are illegal , unless you created them yourself (and lets be real no one does that ) so , while emulation itself isnt illegal , theres a 2nd thing that is illegal that will come up whenever people discuss emulators

I didn't said that usin' emulator is a crime. I said why can't you discuss about emulators.

like i said , if you discuss emulators , roms /isos will be brought up at one point and that would be against the rules

They just do have rules against talking about illegal and/or controversial things on their forums. All we can do is accept that. I guess the idea is that if they allow such discourse on their forums, they are tacitly encouraging that, and they don't want it to be seen that way.

You're discussing it now

FBI, open up!
Because when most people discuss emulators, they’re discussing game piracy. And that is what gets people banned, usually permanently.

But yet steam allows the sale of an emulator. The sega mega drive and genesis classics. So steam can sale them but you ain't allowed to talk about them? That makes zero sense.

you mean the old sega game bundles being sold on Steam? Sega allows them to sell their stuff.

"Emulation" is just a blanket term for running code in a system it was not designed for using additional tools.

Running Nintendo 64 games on your laptop is emulation, as is MS-DOS programs (unless you're actually masochistic enough to still have MS-DOS installed).

That said, "emulation" in the common parlance is typically better regarded specifically because it's associated with things like Nintendo 64 games that stores don't sell anymore.

"Pirating" is typically held to involve something the publisher would have otherwise profited off of, like newer games.

Either way, topics pertaining to emulation / piracy are forbidden.
