The client verifies its installation and checks for updates upon start-up.

There is no way to disable this pop-up.

You can use a few registry tweaks / paramters to hide these messages but its still running in the background.

It doesn't make a difference in you're opted into the beta.

(1) Navigate to your Steam installation (by default this is located at C:\Program Files\Steam)

(2) Create a short cut; right-click on the new shortcut and go to Properties.

(3) Select the Shortcut tab.

(4) In the Target: field add a space and the launch options...

-silent -noverifyfiles

Make sure to separate all launch options with a space - For example, " -launchoption1 -launchoption2")

(5) Click Apply and then OK to close the Properties window.

This should HIDE those start-up messages.

I fixed it by uninstalling steam and re-downloading.

NOTE -- Don't do what I did. It deletes all your games.

Back up your Steam/steamapps/common folder (the one with all the games in it) to a separate folder or a secondary drive first.

THEN do what I did. It really did fix it.

But I had to download all my games that were on my C: drive again, at 25 mbps, because I didn't consider that it deletes all my games when you uninstall Steam.

And there's no "Are you sure? This will delete all your games! You should probably back them up first! [YES] ...[CANCEL]" prompt like a normal, non-cruel developer would do, in a sane, rational world, which used to exist, but doesn't any longer.

But still, it worked, and the update loop you describe is gone.
