Visual Studio 2005 doesn't even support Windows 7, it's only for up to Windows XP. The only studio versions you need are 2008 and newer.

VS 2017 or 2019 won't be able to open a 2005 solution directly but you can just import the source code and add any references and reconfigure the project manually.

Make sure you have .NET Framework 3.5 installed and updated:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21
Make sure to run Windows Update after installing it.

For Windows 8 or higher enable it in optionalfeatures.exe

After installing Visual Studio 2005 make sure Microsoft Update is enabled (you will have to add the page to Compatibility View in IE when trying to install) then run Windows Update to install the SP1, Visual Studio 2005 Update for Windows Vista, and security updates.

Visual Studio 2005 (Professional from my MSDN subscription) installed fine except for the SQL Server on my Windows 10 system.
