I think the no backseat moderation thing is meaningless. As long as you don’t claim authority or whatever you should be fine, I guess.

It can be viewed that way, yes. But also link the rules with it and report the post/thread.

It is more about how you say it.

Yes it is.
"Let the moderators do the moderating. Backseat moderating is when people who are not moderators try to enforce the forum rules. If you see a person breaking the rules, take advantage of the Report () button or simply ignore the offensive post(s), thread, or review. "

Its generally better to just report and move on. I don't know if anyone has ever been banned for backseat moderating though.

Funny thing is, when I was banned for the first time I admittedly told the moderator who banned me that I was addressing the person I was arguing with in a Backseat Moderating way, but I was still banned for being rude.

So yeah, I think it's useless.

Yeah I don't get it. I don't see anything wrong with telling rule breakers what the rules are, and if that's backseat moderation I should have been banned years ago

I say it all the time.

i mean, you're just unable to claim authority. Mods have orange names and a star.

Yeah, telling someone to not do this or that could be considered back seat moderating. People do it all the time, even i do it from time to time, but as far as i know, no one has ever been banned for it, or if they do its not very often.

I got a warning once.

Were you being rude about it? Because it seems like most forum regs (here and on other forums) backseat moderate all the time and nothing seems to happen to them. I can imagine that if one is being rude or crass, then that may warrant a warning or ban.

except for the VAC discussion forum where people seem to be immune to bans

Warnings for most. Some are actually perma banned. I saw 4 regs this year get perma banned from the main forums.

I've seen many users get banned from there for being stupid/rude. Not just the OPs either.

Yeah some folks seemed to think it's okay to be rude to and harass those they think "deserve it".

OTOH, I just like to say I'd prefer such righteous fury directed at those who cheat at taxes, rather than games.
